Derek Simmons named new AD at Linden-Kildare

Linden-Kildare's Board of Trustees hired  Derek Simmons as the new Athletic Director on March 28. Coach Simmons comes from Atlanta after spending a year under Rabbit AD Matt McClure, and has an impressive resume' which includes a brief stint at L-K from 2009-2011 as the Tigers' Offensive Coordinator.

LK Ag Teacher receives $1,500 grant

LINDEN-- Lin­den-Kildare High School received funding from Collins Academy and the Today Foundation totaling nearly $1,500 for a proposal submit­ted by Mariah McPher­son, Agriculture Teach­er and FFA Advisor at Linden-Kildare High School.

Grant funding will be used by McPherson to purchase supplies and materials necessary for the school green­house to become the Linden-Kildare Native Plant Center. “The goal of the project is for McPherson’s Wild­life Management and Horticulture students to provide public and private landowners with a source for native plants, stated Gary End­sley, Director of Collins Academy. “Side bene­fits include education of students and the com­munity on native flora and fauna, improved habitat for pollinators including the Monarch Butterfly, and increased awareness of environ­mental issues in our re­gion,” he added.

County Courthouse to go 'blue' for autism

 LINDEN-- During the week of March 30 through April 2, Cass County’s Historic Court­house will turn blue. No, this is not a left-over April Fool’s Joke.

Commissioners Court, earlier this month, ap­proved a proclamation designating April 2, 2016 as “World Autism Aware­ness Day.”

In the past, the county has recognized the day. However, this year the celebration will last all week.

Commissioners ap­proved a request from Shirley Baker to extend the “Light It Up Blue” display from one day to four days. Baker, is a co­ordinator with Commu­nity Services of North­east Texas, Inc.

“It (Light It Up Blue) really brings the group together,” Baker said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Cass County has partic­ipated in the observance for the past four years.

Atlanta man dies following accident Monday at Gilliam Road Raceway

Steven Smith, 60, of Atlanta was fatally injured March 28 in an accident at the Thunder Road Raceway Park in Gilliam.
According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Smith was directing traffic on the drag strip when he was struck by a car. 
Smith was taken by LifeAir Rescue to University Health Hospital in Shreveport, where he was later pronounced dead.
Thunder Road Raceway is located approximately 35 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Smith is known in the local area as a local historian and for his love of racing and teaching of ham radio techniques.

Evacuations, more road damage follow heavy rains

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms hit the area beginning March 8, dumping sheets of water on Cass County and the entire Ark-La-Tex region. 
The rain caused local waterways and drainage systems to rise quickly, causing issues for local residents and motorists in the area. 
Officials report at least 10.5 inches of rain have fallen over the course of the week. 
Queen City ISD closed campuses March 9 due to a number of its bus routes being partially submerged. According to Superintendent Charlotte Williams, Courtland Road was one such route. The district had a late start the following day at 10 a.m.
County commissioners reported multiple road closures and forced detours for some residents as well. 
As for state parks in the area, mandatory evacuations were in order through the weekend.

Community Celebration for Magnificent Seven

AVINGER– The Magnificent Seven have done it!!!  The Avinger Indians have won the State Championship in Basketball for 1A.

 March 17 will be a day of celebration with a pep rally in the gym at 2:30 p.m. followed by a reception in the McDaniel Building for parents, fans and the community.

Come join the community in celebrating the team’s accomplishments.

Rowe ready for 2nd term as County Sheriff

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe was unopposed in his re-election bid, which ended with the Primary Election March 1. 
Rowe looks forward to serving his second term as sheriff, which will officially begin in January, when he is once again sworn into office. 
This go around, Sheriff Rowe says he plans to get more proactive, specifically in working to slow down burglaries and drug transactions in the county and will continue to do a professional job for the people of Cass County. 
Rowe has 36 years as a certified Peace Officer. He served as deputy sheriff for four years and Texas State Game Warden for 29 years, 8 months. 
He is currently serving in his fourth year as Cass County Sheriff.

Tax dollars at work for Atlanta

Grant funds clearly benefit Atlanta as area receives heavy rain

In 2010, the Texas Department of Rural Affairs (TDRA) awarded $350,000 each to Atlanta, Avinger and Hughes Springs to repair damage incurred to infrastructure due the floods in the spring of 2009. 
The City of Atlanta repaired roads and drainage culverts on East Third Street, Shadybrook Lane and Shady Wood Lane. 
The TDRA’s Disaster Relief grants are funded by the Texas Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the largest CDBG in the nation.

Carmack indicted for murder of Linda Gildon

A Cass County woman suspected in the 2015 shooting death of a Marietta resident, has been indicted by the Cass County Grand Jury.
On Feb. 17 the Grand Jury indicted Wanda Jane Carmack on a charge of murder for the Sept. 10, 2015 death of Linda Lamb Gildon.
According to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe, deputies responded to a call on CR 236 in Marietta around 1 p.m. on Sept. 10, in reference to a gunshot wound victim. 
Gildon had suffered a single gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Carmack, who was the only other person at the residence at the time of the shooting was taken into custody by Cass County Sheriffs Office and Texas Rangers
