Cass County Sheriff Report

Cass County Sheriff’s Office officials report the following calls and arrests:

Tuesday, Jan 1

Deputy James Rachel was dispatched to a home on Texas Highway 77 West near Atlanta regarding a disturbance. The caller said her daughter’s boyfriend was working on her daughter’s car radio and the music was too loud. She asked him to turn down the volume, the boyfriend got mad, cursed and began "throwing stuff around," and then he tore out a car speaker and threw it into the yard. He "had his fist drawn at (her daughter)" and the mother said she stepped between the two and asked him to leave her home.  Deputy Rachel told the man he must leave. When he could not find someone to pick him up, the mother drove him to a friend’s house, followed by the deputy.

Click It or Ticket: Teens targeted in buckle up campaign

Seat belts and birthdays have something in common where teen drivers are concerned. It’s a simple fact. Texas teens have higher rates of unbuckled deaths in traffic crashes than all other Texas drivers, according to Texas Department of Transportation statistics. In 2011, 350 traffic crash fatalities fell within the 15 to 20 year old group. Of those fatalities, 38% were unrestrained. Not only in Texas but nationwide, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20 year olds due in part to failure to use safety belts.

Commissioners accept bid to put lot back on tax rolls

With the exception of a few matters, county commissioners handled mostly “matter of record” business during their Feb. 11 meeting. Commissioners unanimously accepted a $900 bid for a Hughes Springs property that was struck off the county’s property tax rolls in November 2011. Tab Beall of the law firm of Perdue Brandon Field Collins & Mott in Tyler, the county’s tax collection firm, said the bid won’t cover all of the expenses associated with the property, but it will allow the new owner to tear down a substandard structure, an old house, and bring in a manufactured home, which will be assessed on property tax rolls.
