LINDEN—Cass County commissioners, on March 8, approved a three-year contract with Kaybro Technologies to provide a computer network system and e-mail management for county offices.

The county will pay $1,426.31 per month over the duration of the contract. Precinct 2 Commissioner Jon Borseth said that the contract not only includes e-mail service and monitoring but all of the networking hardware needed for the system. “They are also going to provide a firewall, which will increase the increase our security. We want to do everything we can to prevent the county from being hacked,” Borseth said.

The county is already using Kaybro for its other computer needs.

Cass County sees cost of running jail

By Bobby Horn Jr.

news@casscountynow.com

LINDEN—Running and maintaining a jail is not cheap, especially when that jail is in its second decade of service. Cass County is learning that lesson.

Since 2003, the county has put close to $100,000 in repairs and equipment upgrades into the county’s jail says Sheriff Larry Rowe.

The most recent expense, Rowe said, was to replace a chiller unit on the a/c which stopped working in early March. “We were lucky the a/c went out when it did because it wasn’t too hot outside,” Rowe said. “If it had happened this summer it would have been a lot worse.”

The new chiller set the county back $33,000. This was not an optional cost for the county. “We have to keep operating with minimum jail standards (required by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards) or they will shut us down,” Rowe said.

Cothren looks ahead to 5th term serving Pct. 3

By Robin Hall

Incumbent Paul Cothren won his bid for reelection as Pct. 3 Commissioner over opponent M. James Brooks IV with a margin of 219 votes or 59.68 percent.
He will swear in for his fifth term in January at the Cass County Commissioners Court.
Cothren says he is simply grateful for the opportunity to once again serve as Pct. 3 Commissioner. He also knows this next term will include some tough, but important obstacles for, not only his precinct, but the county as a whole.
Looking back to that first term as commissioner, Cothren remembers his first election in 2001 when he ran against Lupton Willis, Kevin Clements and Dan Thomas. They were “All good gentlemen,” Cothren remembers.
