Girl Scout cookies sales begin Feb. 13

CASS COUNTY-- Girl Scouts in the Linden/Hughes Springs area will be ringing in the New Year by putting their entrepreneurial and leadership skills to work through the Girl Scout Cookie Program.  Girls will begin taking orders for the iconic cookies on Feb.13.  Orders will be delivered to customers about April 1.
Extra cookies will be available at this time for those who miss ordering.  
The cost of the cookies will be $4 per box, with proceeds supporting local Girl Scout troops and programs for the girls.

Political hopefuls tour Linden

LINDEN—The campaign trail for two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for their respective offices passed through Linden last week.
Lou Gigliotti, candidate for the 4th U.S. Congressional District was a guest of the Linden Lions Club Feb. 4.
State Senate District 1 Candidate Bryan Hughes, accompanied by representatives from CLEAT (Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas), stopped in Linden as part of a two-day, 11-day tour through the district. 
A former math teacher and construction company Gigliotti is now in the auto business, building aftermarket high performance parts for Corvettes and other General Motor  vehicles.
He is also a racer, having competed in the first NASCAR Truck series race
He is also a two-time Dallas Grand Prix Winner (1991 and 1993).

Sheriff's Office seeks technology grant

CASS COUNTY—The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is hoping that a state grant will help them upgrade the technology the deputies use.
On Feb. 9, Commissioners’ Court authorized Sheriff Larry Rowe to submit a grant application for an “In-Car Video Camera Replacement” project to the Office of Governor, Criminal Justice Division.
Rowe said that he is applying for funds to purchase and install 10 new video cameras in the department’s vehicles. Next year, he said, he would apply for an additional 10 cameras in order to completely refit the fleet.
The cost of the camera and installation is $4,000 each. The grant would pay for 100 percent of the cost, he said.
“Many of the cameras we have are broken or obsolete,” he said. “Some of the deputies have to just use their body cams.”

Investigation in process after threats found at Atlanta High School

Local police and school administrators are investigating a situation that occurred at Atlanta High School today.

According to Deputy Superintendent Joey Geletka, the investigation is in process after a note was found at the high school. Contents of that note includes a threat to kill African American students.

JD Souther returning to MCTT

LINDEN-- Songwriters Hall of Fame member,  iconic musician and actor JD Souther will makes his third appearance at Music City Texas Theater on June 10.
Music City Texas Theater will welcome legendary songwriter and musician J.D. Souther in concert in April.
One of the principal architects of the Southern California country-rock sound, Souther famously played a key role in the formation of the Eagles and co-wrote their hits “Heartache Tonight,” “Victim of Love,” “New Kid In Town” and “Best of My Love,” as well as writing Linda Ronstadt’s classics “Faithless Love,” “Simple Man, Simple Dream,” and “Prisoner in Disguise.”

City adopts change to animal ordinance

LINDEN—The City of Linden is clamping down on the number of dogs and cats a resident may own.
Linden City Council approved the request to amend Animal Ordinance #1-95 during a regularly scheduled meeting Feb. 8.
The amendment restricts possession of the animal to “no more than 6 dog or cats combined could be owned or maintained at a Linden City residence (less than one acre) at any time.”
The ordinance also states that those who have a “residence with property” which is defined as “a home or building with one acre or more of land” may exceed the six animal limit “but cannot pose a nuisance to neighboring residences.”
The amendment passed by unanimous vote.

Fires ablaze throughout Cass County

Local firefighters and emergency personnel have had their hands full today fighting one fire after another. Currently departments are at fires in Huffines, near Roadside Park on Hwy. 59 near Linden and in Domino. According to Chief Robin Betts with the Atlanta Fire Departments, there have been at least seven brush fires started today due mainly to high winds. He believes some have been caused by arching power lines. Several houses have been in danger due to the blazes.

Firefighters ask local residents not to burn during these windy conditions.

Area Ash Wednesday services planned

On Feb. 10 Christians across the area will celebrate a special day on the calendar as they observe the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services. One of the church’s “movable Holy days” Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days (40 weekdays plus six Sundays) before Easter.
Ash Wednesday is traditionally observed by many Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians. 
The 40-day Lenten period mirrors the 40 days that Jesus spent in the Wilderness. During Lent it is common for people to fast as preparation for Easter.

Schools, some offices close for President's Day

CASS COUNTY—Across Cass County, closings will be mixed as the nation celebrates President’s Day on Feb. 15. 
As a recognized federal holiday, there will be no postal delivery. Cass County has also designated the date as a county holiday. Linden, which follows the county holiday schedule, will be closed. Queen City and Atlanta city offices will be open.
Area school districts are also not consistent across the county.
Atlanta ISD will be closed to students, as employees will enjoy a staff development day. Queen City ISD will hold regular classes on Feb. 15, however they have scheduled a staff development day on the previous Friday (Feb. 8) which will allow students to stay home. Linden-Kildare CISD will be closed to students and staff.
