BLAST balloon launch at AMS

By Bobby Horn Jr.

news@casscountynow.com

It is one thing to read about math and science in books but to experience it, in person, takes the learning to a new level.

That is what Atlanta Middle School students experienced April 14 when they witnessed the launch of a high-altitude weather balloon.

The balloon was part of a hands-on exercise conducted by students in the BLAST program.

For the past seven weeks Jerry Goodson, an amateur radio instructor, has been teaching students about ham or amateur radio. Through the radio curriculum four of the students will soon be able to take their Technician exam to become licensed amateur radio operators.

Amanda Bickham, BLAST coordinator, said that ½ of the curriculum dealt with hands-on activities with the other half dealing with preparation for the written test. For four days a week the students have been preparing for the day’s experiment.

Applicants sought for low-income housing program

By Bobby Horn Jr.

LINDEN-- The City of Linden is seeking homeowners who could benefit from a state program that replaces homes for low-income families in need.
Applications are now being accepted for the The HOME Investment Partnerships Program.
“The purpose of the HOME Program is to expand the supply of decent, safe and affordable housing for low-income households,” said Kathy Boyles, with the City of Linden. “The program provides funds to demolish substandard housing and build a new home on the same site.”
Boyles said that in order to qualify for the program  homeowners must live in a substandard home, reside within the city limits of Linden, own their own home, be current on their property taxes, have no liens or encumbrances on their property, and have an income at or below 60 percent of the area median income.

Linden court wins third straight safety award

By Bobby Horn Jr.

LINDEN—Can you say “Three-Peat!”
For the third year in a row the Linden Municipal Court, under the direction of Judge Barbara McMillon, has won a Municipal Traffic Safety Initiative Award.
Linden was one of seven cities with a population less than 30,000, to be recognized statewide this year. McMillon said that she was especially proud of the award in that Linden was competing against cities with much larger populations.
According to the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, the safety award is designed to recognize municipal courts that have demonstrated outstanding contributions  to traffic safety and eliminating impaired driving in their respective  communities.
