LINDEN—In 2015 alone, 455 motorcyclists were killed in Texas by motorists who were at-fault.
David MacKay, with Iron Apostles Motorcycle Ministry, spoke to Cass County Commissioners Court April 26 about the importance of Motorcycle Safety And Awareness Month, which is celebrated nationwide each May.
“You’re going to see more and more motorcyclists on the road (as summer approaches),”he said. “We’re just trying to get the word out there and make drivers more aware of motorcycles.”
By unanimous consent, Commissioners’ Court passed a resolution naming May as Motorcycle Safety And Awareness Month in the county. Precinct 3 Commissioner Paul Cothren, who presided over the court, said that the county’s support was going beyond simply signing a proclamation.

You have probably noticed that this issue looks different from those in past.
The staff of the Citizens Journal has been working extra hard in the past couple of weeks to roll out a redesign that signifies a new era in its storied history.
“We wanted to create a more eye-pleasing and readable newspaper with an emphasis on highlighting the citizenry of the communities we cover,” Publisher Randy Grider said. “We have added new elements like our Good Morning spotlight, Kids’ Weather drawings and Meet Your Neighbor. While still providing the local news and sports coverage you have come to expect, we will also feature more human interest stories.”

By Bobby Horn Jr.

news@casscountynow.com

LINDEN—The Cass County District Attorney’s Office recently teamed up with the Texas Advocacy Center to help make Mother’s Day a little brighter for residents of women’s shelters in Northeast Texas.

Amy Varnell, with the DA’s office, said that this past February she happened to be visiting the Texas Advocacy Center’s website, looking for project ideas when she came across the “Handbags for Hope” campaign.

“The Texas Advocacy Project in Austin collected bags to distribute to women’s shelters across Texas in order for children in those shelters to give their mom and handbag for Mother’s Day,” Varnell said. “Inside each handbag will be information on free legal services, safety planning and economic empowerment literature for women.”

Golf scramble highlights ‘HunterBrave’ scholarship benefit

By Tim Emmons

ATLANTA-- Sometimes the most well-known, unforgettable entertainers and athletes are taken too soon.
The same can be applied to every community and small town across the world that has lost one of its own.
Here in Atlanta, Hunter Watkins, a former standout high school golfer who died of a rare form of cancer in 2015, fits that bill perfectly. But in the wake of sadness, a courageous legacy was born.
Hunter’s memory and legacy will be in the forefront this Saturday when the HunterBrave-Hunter Watkins Committee, which is comprised of family, friends, and community members, hosts the inaugural HunterBrave-Hunter Watkins Memorial Scholarship Benefit at Indian Hills Country Club in Atlanta.
