Teamwork pays dividends in city

Atlanta’s sales tax allocation check in February saw a healthy increase, and the city manager attributes the boost to the fact that local organizations are working together to bring new business to town.

The city’s sales rebate increased 18.65 percent from the same time last year. Atlanta received a check from the comptroller’s office for $208,876. In 2012, the city’s sales tax allocation was $176,041. Atlanta’s sales tax rate is 2 percent.

Postal service to host community meeting

The Douglassville, Kildare and Marietta post offices previously made the list as did the Lodi facility in neighboring Marion County.

Another rural post office has landed on the U.S.P.S. register of facilities under consideration for potential service reductions.

The Queen City ISD board will meet in regular session starting 7 p.m. Thursday in the Thornton Administration Building, 1015 Houston St.

Agenda items include December STAAR retesting results, 11-12 STAAR 3-8 testing results, Discipline Data Validation, consideration of adopting a school board calendar and call for joint election with the city of Queen City as well as campus and administrative, student enrollment and staff development reports and awards and acknowledgment.

Linden Area Chamber of Commerce: Businesses, individuals show support

Linden Area Chamber of Commerce board members received an update on their recent membership drive during their regular meeting Feb. 5 at the Linden Economic Development Corporations office. Thus far 30 businesses and 26 individuals have joined or renewed memberships in the chamber.

TC announces Fall 2012 President’s, Dean’s Lists

Texarkana College recently announced the names of students who have earned academic achievement in Fall 2012 and have been placed on the President’s or Dean’s List. 

Students enrolled for 12 or more college level semester hours who make a 3.8 grade point average or higher are placed on the President’s List.

Those who make a 3.2 or higher are placed on the Dean’s List.

Those students who made the President’s List are Juan C. Gomez, Jonathan M. Hall and Hannah M. Trahan all of Linden; and Keandrea S. Elijah of Douglassville.

Volunteers to plant trees

Texarkana College Earth Club is performing community service events this semester, and one service is to plant trees donated by Texas Forest Service in homeowners’ yards.

Earth Club members will plant trees for citizens over the age of 65 and for the disabled for Cass County and western Bowie County residents only.

The trees are seedlings, small and mostly oak, said Delores McCright.

Planting is available through March 2. Available planting dates are Feb. 15, 16, 22, 23 and March 1 and 2.

Updated property tax information available

New and updated property tax information has just been compiled by Cass County Appraisal District and is available now to assist taxpayers. This property tax information is current and covers a wide range of topics, such as taxpayer remedies, exemptions, appraisals and is of value to select groups, such as disabled veterans and persons who are 65 years of age or older.

LK FFA celebrates National FFA Week

Linden-Kildare FFA students and instructors are celebrating National FFA Week Feb. 16-23. Members have placed FFA fun fact posters all over the campus to inform other students about FFA.

On Monday, Feb. 18, the FFA had a squirrel stew for all FFA members and their families. Afterward, there were games in the gym for all members.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, FFA members wore their shirts to school to show FFA pride and inform others about the FFA.
