Local relatives of Confederate soldier sought

A headstone will be placed this weekend on the grave of a Confederate soldier who fought in some of the most famous battles of the Civil War, and members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans hope they can locate some of the man’s relatives still living in this area.

Linden Police Department received 89 calls for service in January.
Officers issued 43 traffic citations and worked four accidents.
One violation of city ordinance letter was sent out.

Commissioners okay payment to architect

Cass County commissioners okayed two change orders regarding payments to the architect of the historic courthouse renovation project.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Paul Cothren explained the county pays ArchiTexas for its services but the money is reimbursed by the Texas Historical Commission. In this case, the money will be charged off to RBR Construction because of the delay to completion of the work at the courthouse.

Appraisal district receives good audit report

Cass County Appraisal District board members received an excellent audit report during their meeting on Feb. 11 at the CCAD office. 
Preston Caver of Moore and Caver, Inc., CPAs in Atlanta, performed the appraisal district’s audit for the year ending Dec. 31, 2012.

State funding is in jeopardy for two school districts after property value study results were released Jan. 31 by the state comptroller’s office. Two other school districts’ values were found to be invalid but state funding will remain intact for 2013-2014.

Linden-Kildare school trustees signed a resolution against vouchers, taxpayer savings grants, tax credits and other mechanisms during their meeting Jan. 11, which they say would reduce Public Education Funding distributed to existing districts.

Council calls alcohol sale special election

Linden city council called for a special election for "the legal sale of alcoholic beverages including mixed beverages" during their regular meeting on Feb. 11 at the Mary Daughety Senior Citizens Center.

An election was ordered for Saturday, May 11, at the Cass County Voting Building, 227 E. Rush St. The polling place will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on that day.

City, school board filing period closing soon

The filing period for city and school board seats to be decided during the May 11 election opened January 30.

The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is 5 p.m., Friday, March 1. The deadline to file as a write-in candidate is the same.

Three seats are up for grabs on the Atlanta City Council.
