Scholarship winners chosen by Atlanta Area Rotary Club

The Atlanta Area Rotary Club has announced the winners of its Rotary Scholarships for the school year 2012-2013. Winners, their parents and high school counselors will be invited to attend a Rotary weekly meeting at noon at the Horne Enterprises Building on South Louise Street to share their plans for the future and visit with local Rotarians.  
The Winners and their schools this year are: Tucker Coats of Atlanta Independent School District, who has received the $5,000 Peter Vanbergh Scholarship; Jennifer Crow of Atlanta Independent School District with a $3,000 scholarship; Tristen Parr of  Queen City Independent School District, who has received $3,000 and Christian Powell of Bloomburg Independent School District, also with $3,000.  Read more in our e-edition:

Maryanne is a 3-month-old female beagle mix. She is up to date on all shots and is dewormed. She is shy, but good with people, even children. She was surrendered with her mother and sister. She can be adopted for $30. Second Chance Furbabies is a non-profit, “no-kill” animal shelter located at 7639 FM 251 in Bloomburg, next to the Cass Baptist Church. Students of The Tammie Duncan School of Dance in Atlanta celebrated the 24th annual National Tap Dance Day at the Plaza on Main in downtown Atlanta on Saturday, May 25.

Pleasant Hope church closes its doors

Pleasant Hope Primitive Baptist Church first opened its doors at this location, in Huffines, in the 1880s.  On Sunday, May 26, church closed its doors for the final time.

Residents attend Landing Zone Class held in Marietta

The Douglassville and Marietta volunteer fire departments sponsored a Landing Zone Class May 18 for the area’s volunteer fire departments. 
The event took place at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning at the MCA Building in Marietta on FM 250. Hometown veteran to compete for third gold medal in 2013 Warrior Games

Local tie Blake McMinn returned to Colorado last week to compete for a third time in the 2013 Warrior Games as an Army Warrior Games athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
In 2011 and 2012, the Army Wheelchair basketball team won the gold medal. McMinn was on both teams and for a third time has made the team. He will compete the week of May 11 - 18 to defend the title. The Linden Wildflower Trail Quilt Show results

The 2013 Quilt Show was a great success with the Best of Show award going to LaJuan Foster with her “Log Cabin Christmas Tree Wall Hanging.”  The Linden Wildflower Trails Quilt Show was held April 27 at the First Baptist Church Linden in the fellowship hall.
The People’s Choice Award went to Judith Bledsoe’s “Piecemakers.”

Brown wins Best of Show in WFT art contest

 

Cari Brown’s artwork of a cat was deemed “Best of Show” in the adult division during the 2013 Linden Wildflower Trails Art Show held April 27 in downtown Linden.

Book sale raises money for library

The Friends of the Atlanta Public Library held a Book Sale Saturday, May 4, at the old Central Fire Station on Hiram St. The Friends added about 50 new members to their rolls with more than half of them joining as business members. Students compete in Wildflower Trails Art Show

 

Kaitlin Fannin of Queen City High School won “Best of Show” honors in the 2013 Wildflower Trails Art Show in Linden. This is the second year she has won “Best of Show” in the student division of the art show.
The art show was held April 27 in downtown Linden.
