Members celebrate woman of year

The Business and Professional Women’s Club of Linden held their annual Woman of the Year Banquet on Dec. 14, 2013. Oteria McDaniel was the honoree.

Celebrate with 10 freetrees from Arbor Day Foundation

Residents of Texas can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014.
By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns, three white flowering dogwoods. CASA volunteers offer support for children

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is Frank Capra’s Christmas classic that shows what life would have been like for businessman George Bailey if he had never been born.
The despair depicted by Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, is often shared by children in the foster care system, according to local Court Appointed Special Advocates® (CASA) volunteers I have spoken with. It is heartbreaking to hear that children ask, “Why was I born? AISD bands give Christmas performances Dec. 17

The percussion section of the Atlanta Middle School Symphonic Band, directed by Kristen Thompson, executed the inventive and technically difficult “God Rest Ye Merry Mallets.”

The combined bands of Atlanta Independent School District performed admirably to a packed house Dec. 17 at the Atlanta High School Auditorium. 
Larry Breashears directed the Atlanta Middle School Beginner Band to open the show. FRC Christmas Give program provides dinners for families

The Fairview Junior-Senior High School Reunion Corporation (FRC) distributed more than 100 unprepared Christmas dinners to families in the community in need at its Inaugural Christmas Give program on Dec. 21 at the Fairview Community Center.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6968 held their annual banquet to recognize the winners at the local level for the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest. The banquet was held at the post home on Club Lake Road on Dec. 9, 2013.

Two ‘supermoons’ expected in January

Beginning the new year could be a great time for some sky watching with the youngsters. Two perigree moons or “supermoons” are reportedly expected in January with the first citing on New Year’s Day.
The Moon’s distance varies each month between approximately 357,000 kilometers (222,000 mi) and 406,000 km (252,000 mi) due to its ellipticalorbit around the Earth (distances given are center-to-center). Lester wins truck in Atlanta Area Rotary Club drawing

The Atlanta Area Rotary Club held their drawing Friday night despite the parade cancelation.
The drawing, which is a fundraiser to benefit local students by offering scholarships, was originally scheduled to take place just after the annual Christmas parade in downtown Atlanta.
