My Christmas list

It has become a tradition for me. Each year I make a list of the hands-down, rock your socks off best Christmas albums of all times.
The reason for my interest stems from the many hours spent listening to the commercial interpretation of Christmas music that we are all subjected to each year via the radio, commercials  and, of course, public shopping quests. By the time Christmas gets here I’ve usually developed a twitch from the “bumpety bump bump” of terrible hyper holiday tunes that invade every nook and cranny of public life.
I suppose my taste is a little less on the merry side. Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Atlanta1//Magazine41133/Full/index.aspx?id=41133

Whatever happened to imagination?

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
Growing up in the country allowed for our imaginations to create ways to entertain. It allowed us to create toys and the ingenuity to build them from available supplies, which were few.
Many of the old timers dipped snuff and many square brown bottles were available. Living on a sandy hill provided plenty of areas to become creative. One favorite was the train. In the deep sand a rut was made and the snuff bottles were lined up in the rut. You could push the back of the Garrett Snuff bottle and it would take all the bottles down the rut track.  Read more and see the pictures in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine41090/Full/index.aspx?id=41090

A time for Thanksgiving

By Bob Money
Linden church of Christ
On Dec. 4, 1619, a group of 39 English settlers arrived at Berkley Plantation on the James River in Virginia. These brave pioneers dedicated that day each succeeding year as an occasion of thanksgiving unto God.
In 1621, the colony of settlers at Plymouth, Mass., gave special thanks to God for having spared them. They had buried half their small band and at one point their daily ration of corn dwindled to only five grains per person. In 1862, in the midst of the bloody Civil War, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to be an annual national holiday.  Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine40529/Full/index.aspx?id=40529

Trapping mink with Mr. Lollar

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
This is a story of Warlick Chism Lollar. By trade, Mr. Lollar was a farmer. After farming season, he was a trapper and hunter. He worked every day except Sunday, when he went to church. He often worked Sunday afternoon.
He started his day about 2 a.m. and left home about 3 a.m. He would walk from the railroad crossing in Kildare to Frazier Creek toward Bivins. He would have his traps out by daylight. He trapped in a radius of three miles in any direction. Most of the time, he had something in the traps when he ran them. On the other side of a simple wish

Seeing a long wish list full of toys, clothing and other items may seem all too common at this time of year. It is easy to glance past the list and not really consider who is on the other side of each request.
But imagine you are 5 years-old and your family has been ripped apart. Imagine you’ve been placed in a home with people you hardly know and you don’t know when you’ll see your mommy or what will happen next.  Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Atlanta1//Magazine40176/Full/index.aspx?id=40176

When the telephone came to Kildare

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
In the 40’s in Kildare, there were only two telephones. One was in Gorman Moore’s Store and the post office. Mr. Moore was the post master and had a phone at his residence.
If you wanted to visit a friend, you went to their house. If your friend lived miles away, you wrote a letter. That was when there were penny post cards and three-cent stamps. Giving thanks

By Bro. Jackie Stanfield
First Baptist Church of Linden
Thanksgiving should always remind us there are many things we should thank God for in our lives at all times. It should not be just something we do around the day of Thanksgiving, but every day! When we pause and take a close look at our lives, there are always blessings that we can find to thank God for consistently.
