Volunteers are blessings

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist

What is needed of a volunteer? A concern for your fellow man and the intent to help where needed. A loving spirit that makes the people recognize the love and care they have for them.
Tonja Kurr is a volunteer at the Linden nursing home. She is soft spoken, loving person who is devoted to anyone she is working with.
She is a hugger. When you get a hug from Tonja, you’ve been hugged. She knows the residents by name and loves giving assistance. She, by nature, has a good heart.  Tonja helps with the Country Store at the nursing home with Judy Ward. She has worked there for six to seven years. In the past, she has helped with birthdays and always helps with Christmas decorating.
She works regularly on a monthly basis.

The entire month of March is designated as nutritional awareness month. Home economists, food editors, radio and television personalities and others will address various aspects of nutrition.
At a recent professional development summit my counterparts from University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension conducted a workshop on Mediterranean cooking and I’d like to share the information they provided with you, especially if you want to “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” during National Nutrition month for a lifetime.

Lent is a good time to examine temptation

By James McMillan
Linden United Methodist Church
Well we have entered another special season of the Christian year. We Methodist celebrate lent which is the 40 days before Easter. In the early church, it was during this time that new believers learned about the faith and considered whether they wanted to make the commitment to be a Christian, a follower of Christ.
It was just not an emotional decision but one that required serious consideration. As the church grew there came a point in which everyone in the Roman Empire was a Christian so Lent became a time of renewal and refocusing one’s life to Christ.  Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine48183/Full/index.aspx?id=48183

The good life of Collin, the African Tortoise

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
The grand kids were visiting their step-mothers home when they saw something moving in the yard. When checking it out, they found this large turtle, they thought. Later they found it was an African Tortoise.
They checked with neighbors, local vets and newspapers and found no one who acknowledged ownership of the tortoise. Their mom is a real softie and welcomed the tortoise. He was the size of a breakfast plate when found.  Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine48183/Full/index.aspx?id=48183

One morning this past summer, during their morning walk, a man and his wife stopped for a break at their usual bistro. It was a beautiful morning, and they decided to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.
