Two things we must remember

 By Bryan Baggett
Pinecrest Baptist Church
It is impossible to avoid. There is no way around it. However hard we try, it is just inevitable. And you realize it, too! Here it is, early in January, with well over 350 days left in 2014, and each one of us, in some way or another, have looked at our own lives and the new year ahead, and thought of changes that need to be made. Some have made official New Year’s resolutions. Others have quietly made private promises to themselves. Some of you went ahead and joined a gym. (Good luck on getting your money’s worth from February on!)

Phillips 66 Refinery, also known as ‘The Plant’

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
In 1937, the Phillips 66 refinery was built. It was located on Hwy 125 between Kildare Junction and McLeod. It included a camp of 20-25 houses with a bunk house for workers and their families.
Students from the camp went to school in the Kildare School District. Gene Barton lived with his family at the plant between 1950 and 1954. Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine43067/Full/index.aspx?id=43067

Resolution ideas for the new year

By Pamela Lincoln
Cass County Extension Agent
Family and Consumer Sciences
Here are some resolutions set to clichés from the Extension office that have been shared by some of my colleagues:
Keep the home fires burning- make an effort to plan family activities together.  A happy home just doesn’t happen; you need to work at it.  Get everyone involved.  Eat more family dinners together, sharing and counting blessings of the day.  Because, they say, a family that prays together stays together. In light of Christmas

By Robin Aaron
“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love!” ~Hamilton Wright Mabie
There were 450 years of silence before one child broke the quiet and arrived on earth, sending the heavens and the earth into a roar of joy, hope and rage. One child was born so humbly, and yet celebrated so famously, even until today.
As you read this paper, out on Christmas Day in 2013, my heart is overjoyed that He came to be “with us”, “among us”, “as we are in the earth”.
Emmanuel, Jesus has been called, even before his birth. That means God with us. And so He is.

‘The name above all names’

By Bro. Jackie Stanfield
First Baptist Church of Linden
We are about to celebrate Christmas once again, and I pray we will all remember the true significance of this holiday. We are celebrating the birth of Christ, and we should keep Him at the center of all the Christmas celebrations. Remember that He came to offer His life as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Christmas in the backwoods with the kids

By Oreta Wright
Sun Columnist
Christmas is always good but it’s always special at the cabin in the woods. The cabin is very rustic. It has basically two rooms, that is, one room for living and dining and upstairs, a loft, for sleeping.
There is no electricity and no indoor plumbing. There is running water from the windmill. The water is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The cabin has a wood cook stove and heater. Possible Ways to Welcome the Christmas Season

By Brian Baggett
Pinecrest Baptist Church
As December comes and the lights go up and the music starts playing and the stores start sucking us dry, we once again are faced with so many questions. Have I spent enough? Have I spent too much? Cash or (more) credit? This party or that one? My family or yours? This (ugly) sweater, or that one?
Apart from these and other questions that cause us fear and worry, we also must arrive at a conclusion of what we will do with Christmas this year. Not the presents, trees, and decorations. But the heart of it all, the babe in the manger, the God in the baby. So here is the ultimate question; what will you do with Jesus?  Read more in our e-edition:  http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Casscounty1//Magazine41090/Full/index.aspx?id=41090
