FBI makes arrest in NB Ricin Case

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that Shannon Guess, of New Boston, has been arrested and charged in connection with the ricin-laced letters sent to President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg late last month.
In their official statement, the FBI said, “A 35-year-old New Boston, Texas woman has been arrested for a federal violation in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Past success helps build bright future for Chris Ibarra

Atlanta track star Chris Ibarra said good-bye to Atlanta High School on Friday, May, 31, and hello to his future after the ceremony was over.
Throughout his illustrious track and cross country career, Chris has achieved more in a few years than most will in a lifetime.
Hard work and dedication has definitely paid off for the talented runner from Northeast Texas, and Chris has the hardware to prove it.

Commissioners vote to reapply for victim grant

Cass County Commissioners passed a resolution to apply for the Victim Coordinator and Liaison Grant (VCLG) during their court session on May 28.
In the resolution, commissioners stated they approve and support the submission of the grant application for the VCLG to be filed with the Office of the Attorney General, Crime Victim Services Division. Read more in our e-edition:

AISD makes $20,700 investment in procedural training

Many educators would agree that the teaching profession has become more and more about data, charts, test scores and performance than it ever has been. In an effort not to leave any child behind, one could wonder if something may be getting lost in the mix. 
One local campus is making an investment in what they believe may be the missing ingredient to helping children “become what they were meant to be.”

Texas DPS joins national effort to inspect commercial vehicles

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, inspectors and investigators will participate in intensified commercial vehicle inspections from June 4 – June 6 as part of Roadcheck 2013, a nationwide three-day enforcement effort to increase motor carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo safety and security. DPS troopers will be on the lookout for 18-wheelers and buses with serious equipment violations and drivers not in compliance with state and federal requirements.  Read more in our e-edition:

Cass County’s Hope 4-H team wins first place

The Cass County’s Hope 4-H Team won first place at the 2013 Southern Regional Woodland Clinic - the Super Bowl of Woodland Clinics on May 3 at the Little River Conservation District Demonstration Project, Millwood Lake in Ashdown, Ark.  In this year’s regional competition, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana each sent their best FFA and 4-H teams to compete.   http://www.etypeservices.com/SWF/LocalUser/Atlanta1//Magazine28109/Full/index.aspx?id=28109

Local timber industry wins in appeals case

The 11th District of Texas Court of Appeals issued its ruling May 23 in the case of Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), versus a number of this region’s land owners, including Ward Timber, LTD. and Ward Timber Holdings.

County jail suffers non-compliance issues with TCJS

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards issued a special inspection report on May 6 in reference to the Cass County Jail. Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe said there was a form that wasn’t properly filled out and since that time, this issue has been corrected.
The commission’s report said that it was an initial custody assessment which was to be completed on all newly admitted inmates prior to housing assignments to determine custody levels.  The commission reported that documentation received by the commission indicates Cass County is not classifying all inmates prior to housing.

Restored courthouse reopens

It has been a long wait but the Cass County Courthouse is now open. It has been almost four years since the courthouse closed for a complete multi-million dollar restoration project funded by a grant and matching contributions.
