Two parades slated for April 27 festival

The Linden Wildflower Trails Festival will feature two parades this year.  
The “Wounded Warrior” parade will proceed around the square at 1 p.m. followed by a special program.  
The main parade will begin at 2 p.m. with line-up at the elementary school at 1 p.m.

Disaster recovery, investigation proceed in West

AUSTIN — An explosion on April 17 at a fertilizer storage and distribution company in the city of West left at least 14 people dead and an estimated 200 injured.
Counted among the dead were 10 volunteer firefighters who were called to the scene to extinguish a fire discovered there. As they fought the fire, an explosion powerful enough to knock down a nearby school and an apartment complex occurred at 7:50 p.m. Flames and the shockwave from the blast burned homes, shattered windows and incapacitated infrastructure up to several blocks away. Citizens voice concerns about stray animals

The Linden city council meeting was delayed on April 8 as the mayor waited for a quorum. Aldermen Kenny Hamilton and Richard Hutsell were not present. 
Several citizens took the opportunity to address city leaders during open forum. Pepper Hall, Mildred McDuffie and Annis Hayes discussed their concerns about the increased number of stray animals roaming the city and the need for an animal control officer.

Captain Joe to perform at Plaza on Main Sunday, April 21

 

The local band, Captain Joe, in conjunction with the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development will present a free concert from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 21. 
They hope to promote the Plaza on Main and show the community what possibilities it can bring to the downtown area.

Linden City Park project nearing completion

The Linden Area Parks Board members discussed several issues pertaining to the Linden City Park project at a meeting on April 2 at El Inca. 
Mary Dowd reported the Linden City Park grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife will be coming to an end soon and all invoices need to be paid and submitted to the state for reimbursement.

Board votes to approve bid for audit

The Cass County Appraisal District board approved a bid proposal submitted by Moore and Caver Inc. for the 2013 financial audit for the year ending Dec. 31, 2013.
Chief Appraiser LeAnn Lee said, during the meeting on April 9, she received two bid proposals. The other was from Arnold, Walker, Arnold & Co., P.C. for $4,100 with a stipulation that if additional time is necessary, it will be discussed and a new estimate given before incurring additional cost.

Linden welcomes new city administrator

Last week Linden City Council hired a new city administrator to fill the vacancy Buddy Erwin left when he resigned in April 2012 to pursue other opportunities.
In addition, Linden Economic Development Corporations Director Russell Wright retired in December 2012 adding to the cities manpower shortage.

QCEDC approves $30K loan for business

During a Thursday night meeting, the Queen City City Council approved the first reading of a loan proposed by the QC Economic Development Corporation.

Lions Club Follies set for this Saturday

The Annual Linden Lion’s Club Follies are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Music City Texas Theater – Hwy. 11 at Legion St. 
The Follies show is known far and wide as one of the best local talent/variety shows short of major entertainment cities. It has been “the event” of the year and their biggest fundraiser for more than 50 years.

Bloomburg students get interviewing experience

Last Wednesday, a co-manager of Walmart in Atlanta, John Hardaway, made a trip to Bloomburg High School to interview Mr. Rankin’s junior and senior level business students.
