Meet, greet for Hood is Monday

Linden City Council will host a meet and greet for the new city administrator from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, May 13 at the Mary Daughety Senior Citizen Center.

Raffle to benefit Honor Guard

The Cass County Emergency Services District #2 (ESD#2) is holding a raffle to benefit the ESD#2 Honor Guard. 
The Honor Guard recently returned from Waco and West, Texas where they were a part of the ceremonies surrounding the lives lost from the West fertilizer plant explosion. 
The guard is self-funded and the fundraiser will help offset costs of travel and operation as the guard continues their duties.  Read more in our e-edition:

Cass County to honor fallen heroes

Last May, local resident Gary Stewart began an effort to honor Cass County Peace Officers who were lost in the line of duty. 
That endeavor has resulted in a monument marker, which will be dedicated in Linden at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the Cass County Law Enforcement and Justice Center on Hwy. 8. Read more in our e-edition:

City OKs big changes in trash service

The Atlanta City Council voted to make a big change in city trash service as well as purchase police tazers and make improvements to McNoble Harper Park Monday night in regular session. 
Their first meeting in May came to order at 6 p.m. At City Hall. 
All five aldermen and Mayor Keith Crow were present. 
After a brief comment in public forum concerning street signs on Odom and Thompson Streets, which City Manager David Cockrell promised to address, the consent agenda was approved unanimously.

Crime Victims’ Week highlights local services

Families who have experienced domestic abuse, violent crime or abuse often need a place to turn to deal with the emotional aftermath of such acts. In Cass County, authorities have made an effort to draw attention to this issue and what is available to families and individuals when they need it most. 
The Cass County District Attorney’s Office– Crime Victims Division held a program on April 24, 2013 at the Cass County Law Enforcement and Justice Center in Linden recognizing National Crime Victims’ Week (NCVRW). Read more in our e-edition:

Students get dose of reality from TxDOT

Imagine if this story lead was reality:
“A tragic wreck claimed the life of Bloomburg High School senior Shelby McGill Wednesday morning in an accident that took place near the Atlanta Rabbit Stadium. Five more teens were injured and transported to area hospitals following that accident which involved two vehicles as well as a 4-wheeler. Three are listed in critical condition at this time. According to Department of Public Safety (DPS), alcohol and drugs have been listed as possible contributing factors in the ongoing investigation. 
Atlanta High School senior Nancy Moreno has been arrested in connection with the incident and charged with intoxication manslaughter, a 2nd degree state felony.” Read more in our e-edition:

Early voting posting high turnout in city, school elections

Early voting will continue through May 7 for local races in Atlanta, Queen City and Linden. So far, voters have made a fair showing as the uniform voting date of May 11 approaches. 
Early voting in person began Monday, April 29. As of press time, a total of 1090 voters have cast their vote in all local races. 
As reported in the Cass County Sun May 1, Linden voters made an impressive showing for the first day of early voting. There were 216 registered voters making their voices heard on that first day.

ESD#2 Honor Guard stands guard for West fallen

The ESD#2 Honor Guard returned home Tuesday evening a bit worse for wear, but full of appreciation having been a part of honoring their brothers killed in the recent West, Texas explosion that rocked Texas and the nation just two weeks ago. 
Bruce Hagins, Chelsea Toney, Jason Waters and Kendall Collier volunteered to assist in assisting with the Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force during the 15 wakes, funerals and the mass memorial ceremony in Waco.

Shriners’ Day in Atlanta

Atlanta Mayor Keith Crow (right) recently named May 3 and 4 ‘Atlanta Shriners Day,’ whereby area Shriners will take to the streets accepting donationst to benefit the 22 Shriner’s Hospitals around the United States. The first Shriners Hospital was established in Shreveport in 1922 to treat children affected by the Polio virus.

Jeffrey Ware snapped this photo on April 25 of the Cass County ESD#2 fire truck during the massive memorial procession for the men killed in the West, Texas explosion. Ware is originally from Atlanta and is now attending seminary at Baylor University. Ware said it was good to see Cass County in Waco for the memorial.
