Commissioners take steps toward block grant

Cass County Commissioners approved a consulting engineer proposal to provide services for a Community Development Block Grant Project on Monday relating to county road reconstruction and drainage improvements. 
Commissioners will provide labor on most of the project to fulfill their portion of the $270,000 match grant. Work on the project should begin sometime in the late spring or early summer.

Prop. 6: Good for Texas or Trojan horse?

Proposition 6: “The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas and the State Water Implementation Revenue Fund for Texas to assist in the financing of priority projects in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water resources.”

Ward Timber has come out this week in strong opposition to Proposition 6. The measure is on the ballot of state constitutional amendments and would created a statewide fund to support the Texas Water Plan.

Interlocal agreement to benefit Bloomburg

Cass County Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement on Oct. 15 with the City of Bloomburg. 
Precinct 4 Commissioner Darrell Godwin said after the meeting that the City of Bloomburg had received a grant and his office has agreed to supply labor and equipment for the project to conduct $13,000 worth of drainage work. Trustees accept financial audit

Linden-Kildare CISD trustees approved the annual financial audit report for the year ending Aug. 31, 2013 during their Oct. 14 meeting.
Preston Caver, certified accountant for Moore and Caver, Inc. presented an overview of the detailed audit report to trustees prior to the vote.

City ends fiscal year showing positve growth

The City of Atlanta is winding up Fiscal Year 2012-2013 in the black, as council members were advised at Monday night’s meeting there’s $2 million in the fund balance.

TxDOT to publish names of toll violators

AUSTIN — Moving forward with its initiative to collect millions of dollars in unpaid tolls, the Texas Department of Transportation today reminds habitual toll violators that they have until noon on Wednesday to avoid having their names shared with the news media and published on TxDOT and TxTag websites beginning on Thursday. Authority to publicly report the names of violators was provided by Senate Bill 1792 in an effort to collect more than $27 million in unpaid tolls.

FUMC-Atlanta to celebrate 140th anniversary Oct. 20

The First United Methodist Church of Atlanta will celebrate the 140th church anniversary beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. The Rev. Guy Williams is the pastor.
In 1873, a group of citizens joined to build a brush arbor on Hiram Street on Haw Creek. Those 1 1 people organized the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The Rev. J. Osgood, a circuit rider of the area, served as preacher-in-charge. Worship services continued there until the first church was built. Burglary suspects apprehended on FM 251 Saturday

Three burglary suspects were arrested in the act by sheriff deputies Saturday morning. According to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe deputies received a call at about 7:40 a.m. Saturday. 
Deputy Johnny Bailey arrived on the scene at about 7:52 a.m. He observed a 1994 Gold Chevrolet pickup extended cab with Louisiana plates parked in the woods.
