FUMC-Atlanta to celebrate 140th anniversary Oct. 20

The First United Methodist Church of Atlanta will celebrate the 140th church anniversary beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. The Rev. Guy Williams is the pastor.
In 1873, a group of citizens joined to build a brush arbor on Hiram Street on Haw Creek. Those 1 1 people organized the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The Rev. J. Osgood, a circuit rider of the area, served as preacher-in-charge. Worship services continued there until the first church was built.
