Appraisal district approves budget for 2014

The 2014 Cass County Appraisal District Budget was adopted on Sept. 10 by the board of directors during their meeting. County approves resolution for Hazard Mitigation

Cass County Commissioners agreed to adopt a resolution during court held Sept. 9 for Cass County to participate in the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) Action Plan.
The resolution authorizes the Ark-Tex Council of Government (ATCOG) to prepare the five-year update of the Cass County Mitigation Action Plan and to submit an application to FEMA for predisaster mitigation funds to prepare the plan for Cass County. 1 dead following domestic dispute

Shooting may be ruled self defense pending further investigation

Jean Ann Haltom is dead after being shot by her husband Saturday morning during a domestic dispute. Both she and her husband, local gun shop owner, Christopher Haltom received gunshot wounds in that incident.

On Sept. 14 at 2:04 a.m., Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the couple's 12 year-old son to report a shooting at his home.

Public input needed in superintendent search

The Queen City Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees has employed Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services to assist with the search for a new superintendent to replace Rob Barnwell who has moved to a neighboring school district. Failure to navigate

OOOPPPSSS!!!!
Atlanta police faced an unusual traffic problem at the intersection E. Main and Park Streets on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The driver of a truck carrying a wind turbine blade on the way to New York state was given wrong directions. When the truck driver reached the junction, he realized there was no room to maneuver a left turn. At press time, the APD was unsure of the new route the truck would be traversing to the main thoroughfare of Hwy. 59, to complete the delivery.

Commissioners hear public comment on budget

Cass County Commissioners held a public hearing Monday on the proposed tax rate increase and the proposed budget for 2013-2014. 
Cass County Judge Charles McMichael announced the proposed budget is for $10,958,420.77 and commissioners are proposing a rollback tax rate of .5342410 for 2014. The adopted rate in 2013 was .503478 this is an increase of .030763 from last year.

Cass County District Clerk Becky Wilbanks informed commissioners during a public hearing on the proposed tax rate and budget that she is considering running for Cass County Judge. Council approves budget, tax rate

Cass County District Clerk Becky Wilbanks informed commissioners during a public hearing on the proposed tax rate and budget that she is considering running for Cass County Judge. She said this is not a formal announcement but she has been approached to run for county judge.

Atlanta Police respond to thefts

On Sept. 8 at approximately midnight, a theft was reported at the 1100 Block of West Main Street. Officers were dispatched to the location in reference to a theft. Upon arrival it was learned that some linens and electronics had been stolen. This case is under investigation.
