Gathering scheduled March 29 to benefit volunteer fire district

The Huffines Community Center will host an all day gathering to benefit the fire fighters of Emergency Service District 1 (ESD1), Saturday, March 29. The center is located south of Atlanta at 6487 Farm-to-Market 251S, just past the intersection of FM 1841 and FM 251.
ESD1 is headquartered in McLeod and is comprised of volunteer firefighters from McLeod, Huffines and Kildare Junction.
The unit suffered many losses during the Bear Creek fires and needs new equipment to be able to service the southern part of the county, as well as support other firefighters in Cass County when needed.
The all-day event will begin at 9 a.m. with a performance by the Cowboy Church Band. The Phil Cox Band will play at 1:30 p.m., as well as other musical groups throughout the day.
At noon, soup and sandwiches will be served and a pot luck supper is planned for 5 p.m. Donations will be accepted for both meals.

Graf to run marathon for LLS

Agent Jerry Richardson, president of RVOS Lodge #232, presented a donation to Laronda Graf for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Laronda is running in the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington, D.C. next month as a member of the Team In Training program which raises funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. LLS has invested more than $750 million in cancer research. Research funded by LLS has led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies.
Richardson challenges other local businesses to support this important cause.
“Cancer has touched most people’s lives in some way and we would all benefit from advances in treatment,” Richardson said.
