Inmate found dead at county jail

A Cass County inmate was found dead from an apparent hanging the day after Christmas. 
The man’s body was found in the showers at the Cass County Jail, according to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe.  The inmate was identified as Bobby Zackary Clements, 38.

County to purchase surge suppressant for justice center

After suffering three hits to the Cass County Law Enforcement and Justice Center building
Cass County Commissioners agreed to purchase a surge suppressant and phase protector for the justice center. 
A phase protector is a surge suppressant device that should protect the electrical system including the chiller from becoming damaged due to electrical spikes or surges which are often triggered when limbs fall and hit power lines.

AMS wins District UIL for 29th consecutive year

The Atlanta Middle School UIL team won first in their district again this year. That make 29 years for the campus and coordinators say it is no mistake. “These students worked incredibly hard,” Susie Byrd, UIL coordinator for the campus, stated recently,  “They arrived each morning for several weeks at 7:30 despite all the other activities they participate in during this time of year. Several teams had morning and afternoon practices in order to achieve our goal of excellence.” Pictured above are the fifth and sixth grade UIL participants. DOMINO AREA - BOIL WATER NOTICE!

Due to a line rupture that has been repaired, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required The City of Domino Water System to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some another suitable source. When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, water system officials will notify you.

Rainbow Room open house accomplishes mission

The Cass County District Clerk’s Office collected more than a $1,000 in donations and items on Dec. 18 at its 5th Annual Christmas Open House to benefit the “Rainbow Room.” 
The Rainbow Room is a charitable organization that provides direct goods and services to abused and neglected children of Cass County served by Child Protective Services. It contains basic essentials of daily life such as infant and toddler items, school supplies, hygiene products, new and clean clothes for tots to teens, cleaning supplies and household items. QC students to return to much change following holidays

Queen City schools officially have a new superintendent.
Queen City Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees met Thursday, December 19 for their regular session. Present at that meeting was lone candidate Dr. Angela Gutsch and her family.

Republicans draw for position on ballot for primary

Several republicans gathered on Dec. 17 to draw for positions on the primary election ballot. Republican Party Chair Eileen Collins explained the process to those candidates present. 
There are 15 republican candidates running in the March primary election. Collins said that is a significant increase from the election four years ago when there was only one candidate running on the republican ticket.

Defective fire hydrant causes road closure

City employees closed off Rush Street on Dec. 19 to repair a leaking fire hydrant. City employee Robert Luzio reported they discovered the hydrant was leaking 150,000 gallons of water per day.

Atlanta Parade rescheduled for Friday

A lighted float full of bundled up little carolers makes its way through town Monday night. Even though the parade was cancelled, the children were still singing Christmas carols as they went. The annual Christmas parade was cancelled Monday for the second time. Local weather conditions have not been cooperating with the event. The Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce will reschedule the event one more time before the holiday arrives. The event has been rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.

LPD receives funds for two new patrol units

The Linden police chief was excited to announce that the department recently received two new patrol units for officers to use for drug interdiction and human smuggling interdiction.
Linden Police Department Sgt. Tony McDuffie applied for the $75,699.76 grant that allowed the department to purchase two fully equipped 2014 police issue Chevrolet Tahoes. McDuffie said the Arkla-Tex Council of Government Justice Assistance Grant was awarded on Aug. 29.
