Local students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field are encouraged to join the junior volunteer program at CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital-Atlanta. Volunteers work during the summer months and assist in various departments in the hospital including the wellness center, home health and medical records.
Fran Wyatt, the junior volunteer coordinator, said the hope is that volunteers will get hands on experiences that they can use.
The program will commence the first week of June. Wyatt said applications and flyers have been provided to counselors at the Atlanta, Bloomburg, Linden, McLeod, and Queen City School Districts. Junior volunteers must be 14 years of age and not completed the 12th grade to participate in the program. The program will continue through the end of July.

Camp Invention, a national educational program recognized for fostering innovative-thinking, real-world problem solving, and the spirit of invention, is coming to J. K. Hileman Elementary School the week of June 23 - 27.
The weeklong day camp experience for students entering grades first through sixth encourages inventive young minds through hands-on problem solving, using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a fun and creative atmosphere.

Atlanta Police are seeking a man wanted on assault charges in Cass County.

Zamanthrye Cortez Haire, 28, is wanted in connection with charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a domestic dispute that occurred April 4.

At 4:31 p.m. on April 4, officers were dispatched to meet complainant in reference to an assault that occurred in the 400 Block of Holly Street.

Upon arrival Officers determined that an Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon had occurred.

 No serious injuries were reported. Upon further investigation Officers requested a warrant be issued for Zamanthyre Cortez Haire, age 28 of Atlanta. Officers are attempting to locate Haire at this time.

Atlanta Police Department currently has an active warrant on Haire. The assailant is also known by the nickname "Z-Man."

Opponents of Marvin Nichols Reservoir are ready for round three. Linda Price with Ward Timber said they have fought the proposed Marvin Nichols in court twice and won and they are ready to do the same again. They want Marvin Nichols Reservoir removed from the State Water Plan.
Andre McCoy with Rep. George Lavender’s Office said she agrees and was at Atlanta’s Shop and Stroll Event distributing information and encouraging shoppers to send letters in opposition to the proposed reservoir.

The Atlanta city council, city manager David Cockrell, and Mayor Keith Crow received good news last week that was made public at the council meeting on Monday; the city’s audit came back clean, and the city budget is in great shape.
At the end of the meeting Cockrell summed up the audit again, saying that it doesn’t really get much better.
In a brief public forum Peter and Debbie Burke spoke to the council about news they received in a letter that stated they owed five years of back taxes. The letter stated that their homestead had been annexed by the city in 2005, but the Burke’s were never aware of the annexation.

People from all over including the surrounding counties took part in “Light It Up Blue” for autism awareness on the Cass County Courthouse lawn. For the third year in a roll the Cass County Courthouse was bathed in blue for the seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day celebrated on April 2.
Even though there was a threat of rain, that evening the sun shone brightly before it set allowing a blue glow to cast over the courthouse. The courthouse lights were covered with blue filters which were removed the next day.

Linden Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed McNutt Heating and Air as their newest chamber member with a ribbon cutting to celebrate its new location on Highway 8.
Owner Bobby McNutt has more than 10 years experience in the heating and air conditioning business. He said he opened his business about six years ago. He recently decided he wanted more space to work and found the location of the old Triple S Feed Store would be perfect.

The Cass County Cattleman’s Association Spring Steer Show and Sale was held on March 27. Youth FFA and 4-H members exhibited their beef projects they worked with throughout the year.
At the show, honors were given for Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, Senior Showmanship, Junior Showmanship, Top County Bred Steer and Weight Gain.
Caleb Whatley, a senior member of the Hope 4-H Club, won Grand Champion as well as Senior Showmanship.
Patrick Littlejohn, a member of the Linden-Kildare FFA, won Reserve Grand Champion honors.

Across the nation, cities, excavaton industry and utility companies are promoting April as Safe Digging Month.
“Each year, Linden’s underground utility infrastructure is jeopardized by unintentional damage due to failures to call 811, the national call number to have underground lines located prior to digging,” City of Linden Mayor Clarence Burns said.
 If planning to dig, a free call to 811, will connect callers to an agent who will take all the informatin on where and when they will be digging. The individual must wait 48 hours, excluding holidays and weekends, to allow all underground facilities in the yard to be marked.
