New voter cards in the mail

A mass mail out of the new orange voter registration certificates for 2014-2015 was sent out in December. The last batch of voter registration certificates were approved for mail out on Dec. 19. 
Cass County Tax Assessor/ Collector Becky Watson who also serves as the voter registrar says voters should have received their new voter registration certificates in the mail, if not they need to contact her office. The voter registrar’s office has received numerous returned voter registration certificates. Atlanta shows 7% increase in tax revenue

Atlanta saw a 7.32 percent increase in monthly sales tax revenue for November according to a report from the state comptroller.

Domino residents can drink easy following breakage

Residents of Domino are clear to drink their water following an 8-inch break a main water line, though some citizens have complained that they were not adequately informed about the breakage and safety concerns associated with their local utilities.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on December 29, the break occurred in the line that feeds water from the International Paper Mill to the residential areas of Domino.

Flu on the rise

With flu activity on the rise across the state, doctors are urging Texans to protect themselves by getting vaccinated. 
Chris Van Deusen, press officer for the Texas Department of State Health Services, says the primary strain doctors are seeing now is the H1N1, which emerged in 2009 and hit adults and school-aged children especially hard. Read more in our e-edition:

Missing person search uncovers skeletal remains

Officials made a gruesome discovery while searching for a missing person Sunday. 
A man’s skeletal remains were found near the Sulphur River Bridge at Wright Patman Lake Sunday. Deanne Lester claims her new truck

Deanna Lester and her husband David take the keys from Atlanta Area Rotary representative Peter Patel at his Best Western Hotel location in Atlanta on Dec. 23. Deanna Lester is the grand prize winner in the local Rotary organizations annual Scholarship Drive fundraiser. All proceeds will provide college scholarships for local students.

Local man struck by train Saturday

A Cass County man was found dead after stepping onto the train railroad crossing at CR 4224 Saturday. 
The driver of a BS&F Railroad cargo train called 9-1-1 after hitting the man. 
According to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe, the identity of the man was that of Kerry Patrick Grogan, 62, of Atlanta.. 
No foul play is suspected in Grogan’s death. 
His car was parked near the crossing. There was no note found in or around the Grogan’s red Mustang, Rowe said. 
His body has been transported for autopsy.

Accident results in one fatality

A two vehicle accident in the early morning hours on Dec. 20 resulted in one fatality. 
Texas Department of Transportation officer David Stewart responded to the accident that occurred at 3:03 a.m. six miles west of Linden on State Highway 155, just .3 miles east of County Road 1574.
Stewart noted the road condition was wet when the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina traveling east on State Highway 155 crossed over the center stripe striking a 2013 Freightliner truck traveling west in the rear quarter panel.
