County one step closer to new jail

Commissioners to go ahead with land purchase

Commissioners agreed with the sheriff during commissioners’ court on Monday morning to pursue a location for a new county jail to be built for Cass County inmates.

CCSO make arrests on burglaries in progress

Staff Report
Vigilant patrol and observation led to arrests in Cass County recently. 
A Cass County resident on Jan. 16 arrived to check his building on County Road 2872 south of Hughes Springs. He observed two white males running from the shop carrying unknown items. 
He notified the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 3:51 p.m. of the incident. Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Hughes Springs Police Department officers who arrived at the residence at 3:57 p.m.

Community effort draws crowd to discuss water rights

A Cuthand Community effort to further obstruct efforts to build the Marvin Nichols Reservoir drew a large turnout on Jan. 18 by those in opposition, including a number of political personalities. State Representative George Lavender and U.S. House of Representative 4th Congressional district candidates Lou Gigliotti, and Bent Lawson. Gigliotti and Lawson are running against incumbent Ralph Hall. 
According to attendees, the meeting was to inform guests of the events that have taken place and that are taking place surrounding local water rights and the proposed reservoir.

Register to vote before deadline

Time is running out to register to vote in the March 4 primary election. Voters must be registered 30 days prior to an election to be eligible to vote. For the March 4, Primary Election, the last date to register to vote or make changes to a voter registration is Feb. 3. Texana reports scam going on locally

Texana Bank officials announced on Jan. 24 both customers and non-customers of Texana Bank, N.A. have received emails notifying individuals of prequalification for loans.

ACJ to host President’s Day candidate forum

The Atlanta Citizens Journal will host a Cass County Candidate Forum on Presidents Day, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. The event will be held at the Atlanta Middle School Cafetorium.  The forum is a nonpartisan event hosted by the Atlanta Citizens Journal and The Cass County Sun. 
The public is encouraged to attend and hear from candidates running in nine local races.

Runnels discusses benefits of alcohol sales in Queen City

A Queen City business owner addressed the city council in its Jan. 9 meeting about the possible benefits of having package liquor sales in the city.
James Runnels, owner of Queen City Pawn, presented the council members with a map depicting where alcohol sales are in the area.
“I feel like we are losing tax money that the city could use,” he told the council. “Why let that money go to these other areas.”
He said he wanted to mention it to the council because it was “something to think about that could benefit us.”
 
Correction: The name of Queen City Pawn owner James Runnels was incorrectly printed in our Jan. 15 edition of the Citizens Journal as Fincher. We regret this error.

Commissioners hold CETRZ public hearing

Cass County Commissioners held a public hearing on Dec. 31 to discuss the creation of a County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone.
The Texas legislature appropriated $225 million for county transportation project grants. Cass County’s grant allocation from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is $182,726. Linden boasts 24 percent increase in tax revenue

Linden saw a 24 percent increase in monthly sales tax revenue for November according to a report from the comptroller.
Net payment in December for November sales taxes revenue was $26,992.55 compared to payments in 2012 of $21,631.04, an increase of 24.78 percent for the month.
