Nominations are open for the East Texas Music Awards

Online nominations are being accepted for the 2016 East Texas Music Awards (ETX). Voting is free and 100 percent fan-generated. The top five nominees in each category move to the second and final voting rounds. This is the fifth annual ETX Music Awards
You may vote in any or all the categories and are not required to vote in every category, but voting is limited to one session per person. The voter’s name and email are required for verification. After submitting the survey, you will not be able to update existing responses.
Nominees must meet one of the following criteria: they must be born in or have lived in East Texas, or performed in East Texas as least six times within the previous 12 months, by end of the nomination round.
No nominee will be qualified for a category, if they have already won twice in the immediate past two years.

SAU awards Atlanta’s Lexi Oliver the Hallman Scholarship

The Southern Arkansas University Hallman Scholarship has been awarded to two inspiring young females who will be incoming science freshmen from Northeast Texas.
The Hallman Scholarship is awarded through the SAU Foundation and provides two scholarships for incoming freshmen women in the SAU College of Science and Engineering. The scholarships are annual amounts of $12,000 and of $17,000 based on ACT scores and other aid. The 2016 inductees are Elizabeth Jacobs of Texarkana and Alexandria Oliver of Atlanta, Texas.
Alexandria Oliver of Atlanta High School has excelled in her studies with a 4.0 GPA and a 5.7641 weighted GPA, placing her second in a class of 142. On top of her class work, she has been a member of the varsity softball team for four years.
She plans to major in Biology at SAU to prepare her for a future in the medical field as a dentist.

CHRISTUS St. Michael awards scholarships to local students

On May 18, two local seniors were awarded scholarships from the CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary.  This year’s recipients are Marshay Hatley from Atlanta High School and Kaitlin Golightly from Linden-Kildare High School. 
More than 40 applications from Cass County high school seniors were received, and after review by the Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, these two students were declared the top choices. 
The committee used a scoring system for each candidate that focused on grades, character, and intentions to pursue a degree in the medical field.  Marshay Hatley plans to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and pursue a career as an Invasive Cardiologist.
Kaitlin Golightly plans to attend Texarkana College to become a registered nurse, and then continue her education at Texas A&M Texarkana to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship towards their first year of college education.
