LINDEN-- Women who work in Linden are reminded to attend the ninth annual Working Women’s Luncheon “Sea Breezes” on Wednesday, July 20 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Linden in the fellowship hall.

The luncheon is free to all working women in the Linden area. This is a come-and-go sit down luncheon, catered by Martin Farms, honoring local working women. There will be no takeouts available. Organizers expect to have more than 150 women in attendance.

“We are so excited to be part of this event,” Bobby Horn Jr., Sun Editor said. “The women of Cass County are a driving force in our community.”

SummerFest was an impressive event

Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce President Miranda Johnson said two months ago that SummerFest was born out of the idea of giving local citizens the chance to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday at home.
For the first time in a long time, residents didn’t have to travel to Texarkana or Shreveport to enjoy fireworks.
Saturday night’s fireworks show was impressive, and so was the turnout. Many people showed up hours before the highlight of the evening and took advantage of afternoon activities for the kids, good fun and fellowship. It was nice to see the community come together in celebration of America’s most patriotic holiday on their own turf.
Hopefully, SummerFest will become an annual celebration for Atlanta and the surrounding areas. The inaugural event certainly showed promise.

BLAST program’s success makes its loss more tragic

Atlanta ISD Superintendent Sidney Harrist said best: “It’s a sad day for Atlanta.”
That’s a fitting summation of the cancellation of the BLAST program, which has been a huge asset to the school system and the community it served after the past several years. The popular after-school program was made possible through a federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.
Atlanta’s BLAST has been recognized as a model program, garnering statewide admiration. Unfortunately, after being awarded the 3-year grant three consecutive times, the school system was not among the recipients for this cycle. That means that Atlanta ISD has been forced to cancel the BLAST program for this school year and quite possibly longer without the replacement money to fund it.
