L-K student wins writing contest

From Staff Reports
LINDEN-- Linden is home to a budding author. His name is Wilson Spence and he will be entering 5th grade at Linden Elementary in the fall.
As a 4th grader, his writing teacher Rachelle McNutt entered his essay in the PEG Writing Contest. PEG Writing is a web-based writing program for students in grades 3-12 that is designed to help students practice their writing skills and grow into proficient writers.
In May, PEG Writing hosted a statewide essay contest called, “How Wild is your Pet Strawberry?” Students read Shel Silverstein’s poem, “Wild Strawberries,” and then they wrote an essay where the strawberries are live creatures who could be kept as pets. Wilson was an individual winner for this contest. He won $150 to be used toward a class pizza party.
Wilson’s entry was selected from all entries, and was named "Most Creative" based on the creativity, humor, and cleverness of his essay. Quoting the PEG website:

LINDEN-- Community Services of Northeast Texas (CSNT) and the Salvation Army are looking for partners to help provide fans to Cass County residents.
Fan distribution will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at the CSNT office located at 304 E. Houston St., in Linden.
The fans are distributed by appointment only and appointments are only on July 8 and there will be a limit of one fan per household.
Julie Kolacki, Cass County Case Manager and Administrator for the Salvation Army for Cass County, says she has been working on getting a fan drive going for years.
“I have been here since 2009 and I’ve been working at getting a fan drive going since then,” Kolacki said. “June has proven to be hot already and we want to provide fans for relief as soon as possible.”

Bogie Street closed for repairs

ATLANTA — Motorists who normally travel FM 1841 (Bogie Street) in Atlanta will need to find an alternate route on for about a month beginning Tuesday, June 28. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be closing the highway to through-traffic on this date to allow construction work to be completed at the intersection of FM 1841 and SH 77.
Traffic will officially be detoured on a signed route through Atlanta on SH 77 (Pine Crest Drive), FM 251 (Williams Street) and FM 249 (Main Street). Portable message boards will be placed near the construction zone to warn motorists of the scheduled road closure. Local traffic can access Bogie Street from Main Street, but there will be no access from SH 77. The construction schedule and road closure can change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen problems.
