West tragedy a chance to serve for Cass County 4-H chapters

Local 4-H sponsors are preparing a variety of activities as 4-H Week approaches. 
This year, 4-H Week will be celebrated October 6 – 12, 2013. AES presents Sept. 11 Patriot Day Assembly

A special time of remembrance was set aside at Atlanta Elementary School at 8:30 on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Obedient Plant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds

This attractive plant is snapdragon-like, but its square stem is typical of the mint family. If the flowers are bent, they tend to stay in the new position for a while, hence the common name Obedient Plant. Several garden forms occasionally escape to the wild. AES Students have a Knightly Vision

Atlanta Rotary Club sponsors character education program

When looking for modern day heroes, Atlanta Elementary Students find one in Sir Barry Owens. Sir Barry is the founder of Knight Vision, a character education program sponsored by Atlanta Rotary Club. Atlanta High School graduate, Natalie Scott, has been elected to membership in the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation. Anniversary celebration slated for Souls of Faith

New Light Missionary Baptist Church of Linden will hold Deacons and Deaconess Day at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Rev. Anthony Castleberry is pastor.
The Unity District Association will present the Minister’s Wives Annual Queen’s Revue and Style Show at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Allen-Rogers Retreat Center in Linden. The Chairperson is Sister Patricia Collins.
Souls of Faith will celebrate the 7th Anniversary at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Enon First Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta. The Rev. A. C. Williams is the pastor.

Awards banquet slated for Sept. 21

The annual Linden Area Chamber of Commerce Civic Awards Banquet is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Mary Daughety Senior Citizen Center. This year’s theme is “Gone Fishin’.” 
The catered dinner will feature “all you can eat” fried catfish with all the trimmings plus banana pudding or peach cobbler for dessert. Donations will be accepted at the door. 
“Please join the Chamber board, Chamber members, and community organizations as we celebrate and honor dedicated volunteers who strive steadfastly to make Linden a good place to live and work,” said Rebecca Narramore, vice president.

Smooth sailing so far for Childress

Assistant principal Susan Childress is taking her first year at Morris Upchurch Middle School in stride. So far, Chidress says that school year has started off great.  
“All the employees and parents have been very welcoming and supportive,” she told the Citizens-Journal. “Enrollment at the middle school is about 307 students.  The kids have been great and most are glad and excited to be back in school.
