Key Club announces 2014 Resolution Run

The Atlanta High School Key Club has announced the beginning of their latest project.
The Resolution Run 5K will take place January 4, 2014.
The event will be held at Atlanta High School. All proceeds will be donated to a local community charity.
Registration will take place from 7 to 8:15 a.m. raceday. Runners take off at 8:30 a.m. that morning.
Participants may take advantage of early bird pricing until Dec. 20 or register for $20 on January 4.

Lambeth leaves runners behind him on way to state finals

Impressive is a term that means: having the power to excite attention, awe or admiration (an impressive display of skill). 
One can say what McLeod sophomore Bradley Lambeth has done in two years of cross country running is impressive.
The young runner powered his way to the regional round last year but fell short of his state goal.

MUMS teams sweep Redwater in Dec. 9 games

Queen City Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade basketball teams hosted Redwater on Dec. 9, at the ’Dawg Pound and won both games decisively.
The seventh grade team won by a score of 31-10 behind Connor Bingham’s 10 points, Garrett Beckham’s six points and Tyler Nolan’s five points.
With the victory the seventh grade team’s overall record is 2-0.
 The eighth grade team won 28-17 behind the hot-handed shooting by Bradley Norton, who had 11 points, and teammates Carlton Scott and Alex Carver scored six and five points respectively for the Bulldogs.
The win has the eighth grade team sitting at 1-1 on the young season.
Queen City travels to Hughes Springs on Monday, Dec. 16, to take on the Mustangs with action tipping off at 5 p.m.

Rabbs earn split decision in Grand Saline tourney

Atlanta’s varsity boys’ basketball squad traveled to Grand Saline for a three day tourney that began on Dec. 5.
In game one the Rabbs were matched up with Frankston and fell behind 25-8 after one quarter of play.
Atlanta traded basket for basket with the Indians the rest of the way but the opening quarter kept the Rabbits from making a solid comeback and Atlanta fell 81-63.
Nigel Johnson dropped 23 points with three 3-pointers and teammate Aaron Berry tossed in 12 points of his own.
Jeffrey Thomas also added eight points for the Rabbs and Trevor Carroll seven.
In game two Atlanta took out their frustration on Lighthouse Christian by blowing the Lions out of the gym 109-39.

Tigers take 3rd place in James Bowie tourney

The Linden-Kildare Tigers competed in the James Bowie Tournament between Dec. 5 and Dec. 7.  
The Tigers won two out of three games to take third place overall.  
L-K’s first contest was against the Maud Cardinals in which the Tigers were 52-45 winners.  
Jordan Craver led the charge with 15 points and eight rebounds followed by Cortez Peterson with 14 points and seven rebounds.  
The Tigers’ second game of the tournament was against the DeKalb Bears in which L-K fell 48-42.  
Craver once again led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points followed by Peterson with nine.  
The Tigers’ final game was against the tournament hosts for third place, and L-K won the game by a wide margin of 48-26.  
Cardale Peterson led the Tigers with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

Longhorns drop game to Bears, 32-26

McLeod opened up the James Bowie Tournament on Dec. 5, with a game against the DeKalb Bears.
The Bears opened up the game on an 8-2 run but McLeod’s 8-3 second quarter run made the score 11-10 in favor of the Bears at halftime.
McLeod used a 9-5 third frame run to hold a slim 19-16 lead going into the final stanza but DeKalb put up 16 points to McLeod’s seven to pull out a 32-26 victory.
Jackson Baker finished with 16 points leading all Longhorn scoring.

L-K Tigers defeat Jefferson Bulldogs

Linden-Kildare hosted the Jefferson Bulldogs on Dec. 3, and handed the Bulldogs a 51-41 loss.
The Tigers outscored the Jefferson in three of four quarters to capture a 10-point victory. 
Jordan Craver led L-K with 21 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists and Chance Cogswell added 17 points and four rebounds.  
L-K’s junior varsity team was also a winner, defeating Jefferson 57-40. 
Jim Brown led all scorers with 19 points.

Longhorns split final two games

McLeod wrapped up the James Bowie Tournament with a 59-38 win over Maud and a 45-21 loss to Redwater.
The game was close before the Longhorns went on a 17-4 run which gave them a 34-20 lead at the intermission.
Boe McLaurin led all scorers with 19 points and teammate Jackson Baker added 13 points; two of those baskets were from beyond the arch.
In the consolation final, the ’Horns battled Redwater to a 14-14 tie at the half, but the Dragons outscored McLeod 31-7 in the second half to seal the victory.
McLaurin led the Longhorns’ scoring threat with 10 points.

Lady Tigers compete in HS Tourney

Linden-Kildare’s Lady Tigers participated in the Hughes Springs Tournament beginning on Dec. 5, and running through Dec. 7. The Lady Tigers were winners of one out of three games to finish the tournament.  
The first game was against the Harmony Lady Eagles, but L-K wasn›t able to get its offense going and fell 47-18.  
Shardai Love led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 points.  
The second game was played against the Beckville Lady Cats and L-K pulled out a 34-30 victory by outscoring Beckville 13-5 in the fourth quarter.  
Haylee Smoak led all players with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  
The third and final game of the tournament was against the Pittsburg Lady Pirates.  
The Linden-Kildare Lady Tigers played a tough game but were unable to recover from a scoreless third quarter and fell 37-25.

Lady Longhorns compete in JB Tourney

McLeod’s Lady Longhorns took part in the James Bowie Tournament on Dec. 5, but fell to a couple of teams from Bowie County.
In game one Redwater used a 19-11 run in the first to set the tone for the rest of the game and although the Lady ’Horns were only down 28-22 at halftime, the Lady Dragons went on to win the contest 49-35.
Jessica Keener led the Lady Longhorns in scoring with 14 points, Kyndal Shepard added nine points and Anna Parker poured in five points.
Game two was a 46-25 loss to the Maud Lady Cardinals.
Keener and Shepard led McLeod with eight points apiece.
