Juneteenth Celebration held at Pleasant Hill

By Angela Guillory
aguillory@casscountynow.com

The grounds of the former Pleasant Hill School were a place of celebration and fellowship for the Cass County Juneteenth Club’s first Juneteenth Celebration held on June 19. It was a day of fellowship and reflection for more than 100 people who spent the day taking part in the many activities organized by Oteria McDaniel and several volunteers.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is a day for all Americans to celebrate African American history and rejoice in their freedom.
There was plenty of food and activities for participants throughout the day.
McDaniel said they paid special tribute to those who are 80-plus years old. Participants recalled a time of few modern conveniences.

BLAST at Atlanta Elementary is providing educational fun for students this summer.
It is being held in conjunction with summer school, giving students who need extra help with school the opportunity to expand their education while learning the needed curriculum to move forward in school.
Students at Atlanta Elementary participate in three sessions each day – Fit Kids, Mind Works and Technology. These sessions are in addition to school curriculum they are studying.
Students participating in summer school also participate in the activities, but are pulled out at different times throughout the day to receive extra help with their studies, allowing the children to be taught in smaller groups.
AES BLAST Coordinator Ruth Ellen Nugent said they currently have 75 students participating.

Buckley has been a featured speaker for the youth camps at CFC for several years now and is known for his “for real, real, real” message about finding purpose and identity through Christ.
Buckley shares candidly about surviving physical abuse as a child and young adult and how God’s love dug deep into his heart to bring healing to his soul. Coupled with the sincerity and frankness of his messages, Pastor T uses elaborate visual sets and demonstrations to drive home what he is saying to young people.
