Suspect caught after high speed pursuit

A suspect has been apprehended after what started off as a routine traffic stop on U.S. 59, quickly turned into a high-speed chase through the streets of Atlanta. A two-hour manhunt in the woods east of the city followed after the suspect wrecked a vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 16, Texas Highway Trooper Carlos Wilson pulled over a silver Lexus L6450 with Illinois license plates on U.S. 59 near the Cass County line at mile marker #260.

Wilson said that he backed away from the car not, expecting the driver to either get out of the car or open the trunk remotely.

Instead, the drive slammed on the gas and took off toward Atlanta. Wilson gave pursuit, joined by fellow state troopers and law enforcement from Cass County and Atlanta P.D.

At the Highway 77 intersection, the Lexus turned in toward town.

County votes to raise sheriff, constable fees

Cass County commissioners approved a new county extension agent for Cass County during Sept. 8 court session.
Brian Whatley will start on Nov. 1 as the new Cass County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources. He will be training in Bowie County for 30-days prior to his start date in Cass County.
Whatley will fill the vacancy left behind when Gene Bobo retired from the position more than a year ago.

Deadline approaches for voter registration

As the Nov. 4, General Election approaches, Cass County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Becky Watson, would like to remind potential voters the last day to register to vote is Oct. 6, 2014. If a change of residence is required, the voter must notify the Voter Registrar by Oct. 6, 2014. 
Voter registration applications may be picked up at the Cass County Tax Office in Linden, Hughes Springs City Hall and the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce Office. Adults must be 17 years and 10 months of age or older to register to vote. 
When voting, citizens must present some form of photo ID. 
For any questions or to request more applications, call the Cass County Tax Office at 903-756-5513.

CCSO welcomes two investigators

Cass County Sheriff’s Department welcomes two new employees to its investigations team. Richard “Hank” Hill and William “Bill” Page recently joined the Sheriff’s Office staff.  Sheriff Larry Rowe said both have hit the ground running in the short time they have been with the Sheriff’s Office. 
“These guys are doing a great job,” Rowe said. “They are getting cases done and warrants issued for various felony and misdemeanor charges. Public hearing set Sept. 19 for county auditor, assistants

A public hearing will be held on the proposed annual compensation for the county auditor and auditor’s assistants and district court reporter at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 in the district courtroom located on the first floor of the Cass County Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Center in Linden.

Atlanta resident confronts commissioners

Cass County Commissioners were asked to think outside the box during one of two public hearings held on the proposed tax rate increase and proposed budget for 2014-2015 fiscal year. The hearings, which allow for public comment, were held on Sept. 3 and 8 at the Cass County Law Enforcement and Justice Center Building.
One person spoke at the hearing held Sept. 3. Atlanta resident F. Jane Kennedy addressed the court.

Texas unclaimed property returned to owners

AUSTIN - For the first time in the history of the Texas Comptroller, more than $200 million in unclaimed property were returned to rightful owners in a fiscal year, Comptroller Susan Combs announced.
During fiscal year 2014, which ended Aug. 31, Combs’ agency returned $205,341,447 in unclaimed property. Livestock producers urged to enroll in disaster assistance program

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2, 2014 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is encouraging producers who have suffered eligible disaster-related losses to act to secure assistance by Sept. 30, 2014, as congressionally mandated payment reductions will take place for producers who have not acted before that date. Livestock producers that have experienced grazing losses since October 2011 and may be eligible for benefits but have not yet contacted their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office should do so as soon as possible.

Judge rules revisions to abortion law unconstitutional

AUSTIN — U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel on Aug. 29 struck down two provisions in House Bill 2, legislation passed by the Texas Legislature in the second special session of 2013, amending the state Health and Safety Code to restrict access to abortion services. 
Yeakel wrote, “A state’s legislature cannot purport to act to abrogate the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution,” and concluded the following provisions in the law put an unconstitutional burden on women:
