Linden City Hall reopens, delayed by obstacles

Last week the Linden City Hall reopened to customers on Friday morning, a few days later than expected after closing for contractors to begin the renovation project. City Administrator Robbie Hood said some of the City Hall reopening delays were because of some unforeseen obstacles. He said they were hoping when the carpet was removed in the lobby they would be able to clean and polish the concrete floor, which is becoming common practice in many businesses including the recently renovated Cass County Courthouse but this was not an option.

Sullivan elected president of rural housing association

Marlon Sullivan 52 of Linden was elected president of the Rural Rental Housing Association of Texas (RRHA), a 35 year old Housing Association dedicated to the success and preservation of affordable rural housing in Rural Texas. Meeting set to discuss Giant Salvinia

An emergency meeting to discuss the Giant Salvinia situation at Caddo Lake will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug.10, at the Karnack Community Center. 
Organizers hope to create a focused clearinghouse that can more effectively address donations, labor, information, etc. to fight the Giant Salvinia infestation that is devastating Caddo Lake. Lunch will be served at noon.

Brutal murder between siblings

No bond for Stone on capital murder charge

The Cass County Sheriff Office is not releasing information regarding any motive in a murder that took place yesterday, Tuesday, July 5. 

The suspect in this case will not be released on bond for the capital murder charge. He has an additional bond of $75,000 for aggravated assault with injuries and a prior parole hold. 

A woman's body was located in a barn on CR 2113. The altercation that preceded was reportedly between two siblings. 

Just before 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, the Cass County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about an assault in progress on CR 2116. Before deputies arrived on scene, 59 year-old Jima Anthony Stone reportedly assaulted his sister, 60 year-old Deborah Steed and another female friend. 

The friend left the house and went to a neighbor's house to call police.

Heatstroke Prevention Day July 31

Children susceptible to heat stroke

 
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has designated July 31 as National Heatstroke Prevention Day.
Since 1998, more than 550 children across the United States have died from heatstroke while unattended in cars.  During 2012, a total of 32 children died of heatstroke in cars in the U.S., including five in Texas.   
The most recent took place May 24. The Corpus Christi community mourned the loss of a one-year-old boy. This would be the third heatstroke death of a child in a car to occur in Texas during May and the fifth overall in the U. S. during 2013.

Queen City ISD preparing for Barnwell’s departure

No decision yet on replacement for superintendent

After serving more than nine years as Superintendent with the District, Rob Barnwell has announced his resignation from Queen City Schools. 
The Board of Trustees met Monday night in a special session to discuss the matter and review terms of Barnwell’s resignation. Barnwell is the lone finalist for superintendent of Jefferson Independent School District (ISD). 
Statements released on behalf of the school board expressed the school board’s position.

Safety seat checks prove sad statistics

TxDOT sponsors child safety seat check at Atlanta Fire Station

 
Cass County only proved that certain statistics related to child safety seats are accurate. Road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the United States. Correctly used, child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.
Parents and Caregivers were given the chance to have their Child Safety Seats checked for safety and proper installation on Friday, July 26 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. These child safety seat checks were free and were conducted at the Atlanta Fire Department, 606 S. Louise St.

Appraisal district seeks depository proposals

Cass County Appraisal District agreed to go out for proposals again for district depository during its July 9 meeting. In June the appraiser received only one proposal after further investigation it was discovered that the proposals were not forwarded to the proper departments. Based on Chief Appraiser LeAnn Lee’s recommendation the board agreed to accept proposals again.
Lee said protest hearings ended on July 18. Records were certified to the entities on July 25.
The districts proposed budget was sent to the entities. Lee said she has made herself available to answer any question the taxing entities may have.
