Early voting is now underway until Oct. 31

Early voting in the Nov. 4 General Election started on Monday. Voters will decide on city, county and state candidates. Voters will be required to provide an acceptable form of photo identification when they vote.
Friday is the deadline to request an absentee ballot to vote by mail. County Clerk said her office has received more than 650 requests for absentee ballots.
Voters who are 65 or older or disabled can vote by mail in addition to voters who will be out of the county during early voting and on Election Day.
Applications for absentee voting may be applied for at the county clerk’s office. Completed and signed applications for ballot by mail should be mailed to Jannis Mitchell, Early Voting Clerk, P.O. Box 449, Linden, Texas 75563.

Atlanta man killed in motorcycle crash

 A fatal motorcycle accident Tuesday afternoon brought traffic to a standstill on eastbound I-30 as law enforcement officials and emergency personnel worked to investigate the scene, just east of the Hwy. 82 interchange near mile marker 198.

According to eye witness statements, the male driver of the motorcycle, identified as Timothy James Dubuisson, 33, of Atlanta, Texas was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed and passing other motorists on the highway shoulder when he collided with a stationary construction vehicle.

That section of I-30 is currently a work zone as crews work to resurface the roadway. According to the official DPS report, Dubuisson was in a closed off construction lane when he struck the parked truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Nancy Talley.

East Texans Charged in Red River Army Depot Conspiracy

U.S. Attorney John M. Bales and Colonel Brandon Grubbs, Red River Army Depot InstallationCommander, announced today that seven individuals have been indicted on federal charges involvingconspiracy to commit an offense and to defraud the U.S. government and theft of government property or money in the Eastern District of Texas

The defendants were named in a 2-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury on Sep. 17, 2014, charging them with conspiracy to commit an offense against and to defraud the U.S. government and theft of government property or money.  These violations are alleged to have caused over $2 million in losses to the Department of the Army and Red River Army Depot.  Those charged are:

Latent prints used to solve local crime

Arrests made in robbery at Modern Primitives
 
The Cass County Sheriff Office has arrested two of the three suspects wanted in an aggravated robbery that occurred in October at Modern Primitives, located in Domino, Texas. Video surveillance and fingerprints led investigators to the two arrests made so far. One suspect wanted in connection with the crime is still at large. 
As reported in the Citizens Journal following that incident, the aggravated robbery occurred on October 24, 2013, at approximately 1:20 p.m.

APD arrests brothers on felony charges

A pair of brothers is spending some time in jail after a scuffle got a little out of hand.
On Sept. 14, shortly before 5 p.m. dispatch directed Officer Greg Restelle to the 200 block of Tejas with a report of a disturbance in progress involving a gun.
Upon investigation Restelle learned that Kerry L. Pickett, 38, of Texarkana allegedly struck his brother, Russell Edward Pickett, 32 of Atlanta with the butt of a firearm.
Kerry was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a family member. This is a 2nd degree felony with punishment ranging from two to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

City council approves LEDC budget 4 to 1

Linden Economic Development Corporation’s (LEDC) budgets passed the second attempt on Sept. 8 at the Linden City Council meeting. The motion passed four to one in favor of the two budgets but not without a considerable amount of discussion beforehand. 
The LEDC attempted to pass the budget on Aug. 11. With the mayor breaking the tie vote, the council asked that the budgets be resubmitted with changes to the format.
A quorum of the LEDC board attended the Sept. 8 meeting of the city council, to once again present the LEDC’s budget in a format that the entire council could easily understand. The LEDC called their meeting in conjunction to be able to answer and act on any further budget issues that might be brought up by the council.

Council approves balanced budget of $1.7 million

Linden City Council passed a balance budget and adopted an increased tax rate during its Sept. 8 meeting. Council approved a $1,731,294 balanced budget for fiscal year 2014-2015. This is about $40,000 less than last year’s adopted budget of $1,771,392. There was no discussion and the motion passed unanimously.
Council adopted a property tax rate of .595839, which is a 6.66 percent increase in the tax rate. This tax rate will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate.

CCAD board OKs balanced budget

Cass County Appraisal District board approved a $630,577 balanced budget on Sept. 9 for 2015. This is a 2.4 percent increase from last year’s $615,980 budget approved in 2013. It includes, a reserve for performance and merit raises. 
Cass County Appraiser LeAnn Lee said the majority of the increase is due to the higher contracts for Eagle Appraisal & Consulting and Capitol Appraisal. Linden-Kildare CISD cancels November trustee election

Linden-Kildare Consolidated Independent School District Board canceled the trustees election scheduled to be held on Nov. 4. The order of cancellation was issued during a regular meeting held Sept. 8. 
Trustees Marlon Sullivan, place 1 and James Randall Fitts, place 2, were certified as unopposed and are elected. L-KCISD earns ‘Superior’ rating on TEA’s FIRST

State accolades continue to roll in for the Linden-Kildare Consolidated Independent School District. 
On Sept. 5, the district learned that it had earned a “Superior” rating from the Texas Education Agency on its Final Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST).
