Escapee apprehended Saturday, boxers and all

Cort Rabon Buzbee was apprehended Saturday after a manhunt that lasted nearly six hours. Buzbee was wanted on two felony warrants out of Oklahoma. He now has another felony charge for felony escape out of Cass County.  The assailant was still in the boxers and handcuffs he was wearing when he fled on foot.

According to Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe, the sheriff’s office had received a tip that Buzbee was staying at a location in Red Hill. Deputies Powell and Lewis went to the location to serve the two felony warrants for possession of methamphetamines and grand theft auto.

Buzbee bailed out a window and fled on foot. He was quickly apprehended and cuffed and subsequently put in the deputies’ patrol unit.

Plans halted for restitution center in Maud

State cancels plan to send sex offenders to Maud

[PUBLISHER'S NOTE: A story will appear in our midweek edition (Feb. 25) of the Atlanta Citizens Journal detailing plans to utilized the vacant restitution center in Maud. The facility is located just over a mile from the local school district and just yards from several homes in the immediate area. Quotes included in that article were obtained the day of our press time. We were informed late Monday that plans had changed and that the state had decided not to pursue plans to house sex offenders at that location. This is our follow up to this original story. We thank our local officials, including Catherine Betts for their diligence and cooperation in this matter to be sure our readers are informed on this important issue.]

L-KCISD and city closes due to icy conditions

Last night city and school officials made a call to delay start until 10 a.m. Monday morning. Since that time Linden Kildare CISD classes have been canceled and city hall has been closed in Linden.

Linden City Administrator Robbie Hood said only nonessential personal will remain to monitor city road conditions and to respond to public works emergencies. 

Hood advises citizens to stay off the roads and to be careful if they have to travel. He noted that sidewalks and roads are slick. Public works is salting the downtown sidewalks.

Atlanta voters to decide beer, wine sales

Atlanta voters will get to voice their opinion on whether or not alcoholic beverages can be sold in the city when they go to the polls May 9.
Last week a petition signed by more than 500 people was presented to Atlanta City Secretary Danica Porter asking for the measure to be placed on the ballot. Under the language of the measure, voters will decide whether or not to allow beer and wine sales for off-premise consumption.
Danica Porter said that on Dec. 19 Rebecca Hatch filed an application for a petition with the City of Atlanta. Hatch represents Texas Petition Strategies (TPS), an Austin-based company which specializes in local options, bond elections and political consulting. TPS also has offices in Arlington.

Date set for 2015 return of Forest Festival

An Atlanta tradition will make a return this fall as organizers resurrect the Fall Festival.
This year’s festival will be held Oct. 7-10, says festival committee member and Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce President Miranda Johnson.
Organizers say that it will be held in the property behind the Atlanta Fire Station where Atlanta’s old track is located.
The Forest Festival was the successor to the Atlanta Watermelon Festival, which had taken place in the 1940’s and 1950’s.
In 1967 members of Atlanta Festival’s, Inc. wanted to relive the fun they remembered at the
watermelon festival and created the Forest Festival.

Texas registration, inspection stickers become two-in-one

Cass County is gearing up for a new Texas Two Step

Beginning March 1, the state will no longer issue vehicle inspection stickers and will move to a “Two Steps, One Sticker” program.
Under the new system, Texas vehicle owners will need to pass inspection prior to renewing their registration. The familiar blue-bordered Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) registration sticker will serve as proof of both inspection and registration.
“Cass County is prepared to make this transition as smooth as possible for our residents,” said Cass County Tax Assessor-Collector, Becky Fant. “During the first year of the program beginning March 1, 2015, all you will need to do is make sure you already have a valid passing vehicle inspection before you renew your registration in our office, online or by mail.”

CHRISTUS, Community Healthcore cut ribbon to new crisis unit

The Regional Crisis Response Center (RCRC) in Atlanta offically opened this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event took place Tuesday in Atlanta. 

The seven-year process came to completion and was celebrated with an open house and tour of the facility. This will likely be the only time the public will have been invited to the RCRC unit. The crisis response center will address findings of a community needs assessment and ensure help to adult patients suffering with a mental health crisis.

Wilbanks heads up first Commissioners Court meeting

Cass County Commissioners held their first court session of the new year on Monday. It was a humorous moment just after the meeting began when Cass County Judge Becky Wilbanks’ cell phone went off. She apologized as she took the call from Judge Ralph Burgess. She then announced in a light hearted moment that all cell phones needed to be turned off.

Wilbanks noted that Precinct 1 Commissioner Brett Fitts was absent due to illiness.

Preceding with the meeting bonds of newly elected officials and employees of the county clerk’s office were approved.

Wilbanks announced Statements and Oaths of newly elected officials had been given to the County Clerk as a matter of record.
