Linden to shut off water June 11

LINDEN—On June 11, Linden residents can expect an interruption their water service, beginning at 8 a.m.

According to the City of Linden, public works will turn off the city’s water supply. Interruptions are expected from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. The city says the water is being turned off so they may make required repairs to the elevated water tower in downtown Linden.

Best in state: AHS Journalism team earns 1st State UIL Championship

They don’t jump hurdles or run sprints, but what the Atlanta High School Journalism team has accomplished is significant nonetheless. They are the new 4A UIL State Champions. 
The group of four have brought home a state championship to Atlanta for the first time in their category. And the team as a whole garnered 32 points, more than twice what their second place opponents earned, 15, at the UIL state championship meet.
The win is also a meaningful send off for one of Atlanta ISD’s educators. Susan Greig will be retiring after this year. The team for 2015 was her seventh in nine years to coach all the way to the state level, but are her first state champs.

Cass County added to list of disaster areas

Cass County has been declared a disaster area officially due to high rains and flooding damage to county roads. The Texas Governor’s office has declared 40 Texas counties as disaster areas as of May 27.
County Judge Becky Wilbanks submitted a letter to the state May 18 outlining Cass County’s problems and asking for assistance.
“As a result of excessive rain, wind and flooding that has occurred from January 1, 2015 to the present, Cass County is currently facing tremendous physical and economic losses,” Wilbanks wrote. “A large number of roads have been flooded, culverts washed away and roadbeds destroyed. Additionally, many trees have been downed due to high winds.

Local teen gives final gift of life as organ donor

The death of local teen Ty Ball has rocked the area. The young man who’s life reportedly touched students all over the area will be memorialized this Saturday. 
Ty Awtrey Ball, 16, of Queen City, died of injuries sustained while horseback riding with his brother Sunday night.
Ball sustained severe injuries to his head with internal bleeding. He was transported to a Shreveport hospital and survived through the night as family and friends kept a vigil by his side and at the medical facility.

AISD’s Harrist says education bill is unfair

If state legislators have their way, the formula by which teachers get paid will move from base salary-plus experience to a formula based on how well their students perform on standardized tests.
On April 7, the Texas Senate passed SB 893 by a 27-4 vote. Among those voting for the bill were Atlanta’s State Senator Kevin Eltife, a Republican. 
The Senate bill requires Texas Education Agency Commissioner Michael Williams to create a teacher development framework (TDF) that must include the “teacher’s implementation of discipline management procedures; academic performance of students; teaching standards that show expected teacher knowledge, understanding, skill and practice to ensure student educational growth in academics; classroom observations; and data related to the teacher’s efforts to improve professional performance.”

Neal pleads guilty to continuous sexual assault

Kelly Jay Neal pled guilty to continuous sexual abuse of a young child on Thursday, March 26 in the 5th District Court in Linden. Neal will serve 25 years for his crimes, which involved two victims, both under the age of 14 at the time of the assaults.

Neal’s charge is a first degree felony carrying a special punishment range of 25-99 years or life.  To be convicted under this statute, a defendant has to have committed two or more acts of sexual abuse, occurring at least 30 days apart, according to prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Courtney Shelton.

Neal’s minimum sentence was part of a plea bargain with the Cass County District Attorney’s office.

Texarkana College trustees OK tuition rate hike March 24

Texarkana College raises tuition

 A new tuition and fees table was introduced March 24 at the Texarkana College Board of Trustees meeting showing a cost that the school says remains in line with the state average for community colleges across Texas and among the lowest of all regional higher education institutions.

A semester at Texarkana College will now cost an in-district student an average of $976 in tuition and fees for 12 semester credit hours compared to an average of $940 for the last two years.
