On Jan. 11 middle school and high school students at McLeod ISD got an up-close look at the devastating effects of synthetic marijuana.

While there are those who claim it is fate Emily Bauer knows the truth. Bauer suffered multiple strokes and almost lost her life due to synthetic marijuana. Now she and her mother, Tonya, travel throughout Texas as well as the rest of the nation, telling students about the dangers of synthetic marijuana.

“They have been on national news networks including an interview with Katie Couric to help spread their message,” Kathy O'Kelley, McLeod ISD Counselor said. “When asked what advice she gives students about using synthetic marijuana or any drugs she said, ‘Don't do it.  It is not worth it.  Even if you use regular marijuana, someone can substitute synthetic marijuana without you knowing it’.

Commissioners' Court changes meeting dates

Cass County Judge Becky Wilbanks

By Bobby Horn Jr.

news@casscountynow.com

Commissioners’ Court watchers used to showing up on Monday mornings to watch the proceedings will find an empty courtroom when Jan. 25 rolls around.

The court, by unanimous vote Jan. 11, approved a measure which moves regular meetings of the court to the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, beginning Jan. 26.

County Judge Becky Wilbanks said that the court had met on Tuesdays in the past and that commissioners wanted a return to that schedule. She said that adding an extra day it allows the other county offices more time to prepare their reports for commissioners.

“The commissioners said that it worked for their schedules as well so we decided to change it,” she said.

Court will continue to meet in the Cass County Law Enforcement And Justice Center Building, in the second floor justice of the peace courtroom at 8:30 a.m.

Open carry begins Jan. 1

By Bobby Horn Jr.

news@casscountysun.com

CASS COUNTY—Beginning Jan. 1, people may start seeing something that has not been seen in Texas in 144 years, citizens carrying handguns in the open.

HB 910, which the 84th Legislature passed in 2015, allows those who already have a concealed handgun permit to carry a handgun in a belt or shoulder holster.

Like those who have concealed handgun permits, open carry is not allowed on school property, in courthouses or buildings with courthouses in them, on federal property (including post offices), polling locations and businesses that derive 51 percent of their income from alcohol sales (such as bars).
