Linden Ole Time Trade Days scheduled for Saturday

Linden Ole Time Trade Days and the Farmers Market will be open this Saturday at the Linden City RV Park under the shade trees.
Organizers said the weather should be perfect for vendors and shoppers looking for something to add to their collections.
Vendors should be set up by 8 a.m.

Wildflower Trails seeks applicants

The Linden Wildflower Trails of Texas Committee seeks scholarship applicants for the traditional Wildflower Trails Scholarship. This scholarship supports juniors, seniors, or graduate students at an accredited institution of higher learning.
Applicants must be Linden-Kildare graduates. To be eligible, a student must be a junior, senior, or graduate student at an accredited institution of higher education in the fall semester; must demonstrate a GPA of at least 2.5 (current official transcript required); and must be a graduate of Linden-Kildare High School.

McLeod students compete in UIL

McLeod Elementary students recently traveled to North Hopkins to participate in an Elementary UIL academic meet.  The following students were the winners in their particular grade and event.  

Second grade
Kaylee Abbitt, first place in creative writing
Marshall McElmurry, fourth place in storytelling

Third grade
Sarah Ragland, sixth place in creative writing
Carlee Heldt, Seth Tallant, Kayla Taylor, Jessica Lawson and Madison Patrick, third place team in music memory
Logan McClain, sixth place in chess

American Legion Boys and Girls State candidates meeting

“Best and Brightest” of the junior classes from Atlanta and Queen City High Schools and their parents attend a special meeting on Tuesday night May 27 to help prepare and indoctrinate the candidates who are to attend the 2014 Boys State and Girls State Programs sponsored by the American Legion of Texas.
Their presence was requested by Evan Evans, The Boys State Chairman of The J. E. Manning American Legion Post 258 in Atlanta.
The Boys State Program is held at The University of Texas in Austin from June 8 – 13 and the Girls State is held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin from June 15 – 21.

AISD board swears in members

Keri Richardson, Gus Schumann, and Randall Thomason were sworn in at the latest Atlanta ISD board meeting after results from the May 10 election were canvassed and found to be correct.
After the regular meeting started, Atlanta Middle School Math and Science students who recently competed shared their knowledge with the trustees. Each trustee was given a packet of problems and students walked the adults through the difficult problems step by step.

Albertson wins Cass County District Clerk runoff race

In the lone county runoff race for Cass County District Clerk Republican Candidate Jamie Price Albertson will be the new district clerk for Cass County in January. Albertson beat out opponent Pam Jaynes in the primary runoff election held May 27.
Of those registered to vote in Cass County 2,108 voters cast their ballots in the runoff election.
Albertson captured 1,043 votes for a total of 53.85 percent over Jaynes 894 votes or 46.15 percent.

Close call for driver of diesel today

Friday, May 30, 2014 - An 18-wheeler was struck by a train Friday afternoon at a crossing on Miller County Road 76 in Arkansas when the driver of the truck was unable to move his rig off the tracks as the train approached. The truck driver was able to jump from the vehicle and took off running. He was not injured in the accident.

Local fire fighter returns home after being injured in the line of duty

A local fire fighter injured in the line of duty has returned home to his family, still recovering but thankful to be home safe. Dakota Huddleston arrived Wednesday to many loved ones friends and fire fighting brothers.

The Bloomburg Volunteer Fire Chief is the subject of a major fundraising event scheduled this weekend.. The Hero Run 5k and Pumper Race sponsered by Richardson "No Bull" Insurance, will begin in Queen City, Texas at the the First Baptist Church parking lot. The 5k will begin Saturday, May 31 at 8 a.m. and the Pumper Race will begin at 10 a.m. 

The bloodmobile will also be at the event Saturday. LifeShare Blood Centers has a special account set up for Huddleston as well.

Volunteers build new playground equipment for Crow Heath Park

Volunteers took time out over the Memorial Day weekend to construct new playground equipment at the Crow Heath Park. Volunteers spent Saturday morning constructing the swing set and slide to replace the old equipment removed earlier this year.
The Linden Youth Athletic Association, the First United Methodist Church Fishermen’s Class and the Mayor of Linden were the organizations represented by volunteers to construct a playground swing and slide set for the children of Linden to utilize.
