MUMS write for Vets

Morris Upchurch Middle School in conjunction with the Atlanta and Queen City VFW sponsored the Patriot’s Pen essay writing contest among all sixth through eighth grade students. The Patriot’s Pen contest is an essay competition sponsored by the VFW nationwide which gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy with the prospect of winning U.S. Savings Bonds. Christmas seems to be racing swiftly toward us this year. The Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013. 
This year’s parade theme will be “Merry and Bright, A Glow in the Dark Christmas!”.

Spirit of Christmas Food Drive

Brookshire’s will start the collection of food for holiday gift boxes as part of its annual “Spirit of Christmas” food drive on November 23rd.   Brookshire’s will have pre-packaged bags of non-perishable goods on a display that can be purchased for $5 to $6 and placed in the collection bin at the front of the store.  Donors may also purchase their own items and leave them in the collection bin, or they may make cash donations of as little as $1 up to any amount at the store to purchase food for the drive. Stanley, Asher named to Texas A&M Texarkana distinguished alumni list

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Alumni Association recently announced the 2013 Distinguished Alumni and Faculty honorees. 
Local business owner Lee Stanley has been named to that list. 
Forrest E. Asher will be recognized as a distinguished faculty honoree. Asher’s son, Pete, is a longtime resident of Atlanta. 
The recipients will be recognized at the annual Distinguished Alumni & Faculty Awards Celebration that will take place November 14. 
A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m.,

Good Shephard to offer Stroke and Osteoporosis Screenings in Atlanta

Residents living in and around the Atlanta, Texas community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture.  Atlanta First United Methodist Church will host Life Line Screening on 11/22/2013.  The site is located at 701 Lindsey Lane in Atlanta.  Heino Erichsen from The Woodlands, TX, participated in a Life Line Screening event in January of 2009 and learned that he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a blockage in his carotid artery.  He writes, “Thank you for saving my life!”  This event is being Sponsored By: Good Shepherd Medical Center. Red River Pharmacy official grand opening

The Atlanta Area Chanber of Commerce hosts a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday morning for Red River Pharmacy. The retail pharmacy opened its doors on September 10 and has been serving the customers of Atlanta since. Three of the four partners cut the ribbon Thursday morning. They are Coy Williamson, Clay Morris and Curt Willett. Partner David Boudreaux is not pictured. The business is located at 102 E. Allday Street. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Red River Pharmacy employees pictured include Crystal Fitts, Cindy Hagans, Amy Dotson, Dee Hamilton, Katy Cox, Haleigh Carter, Brittany Rhyne and Gary Maxwell.
