Harrison defeats incumbent Goodson for Precinct 2 post

Cass County will have a new constable on the west-side on Jan. 1, 2017.
Anthony “Tony” Harrison outpaced incumbent Jerry Goodson 218-117 to win the Republican primary runoff for constable of Precinct 2. In early voting Harrison took a 60-37 advance, which he parlayed into the May 24 victory.
No democrats ran for the post. Goodson offered well wishes to his opponent on the Precinct 2 constable Facebook page. “Congratulations to Tony,” Goodson wrote. “I’m sure he’ll serve the citizens of Precinct 2 well.”
Harrison was also the top vote-getter in the March party primary, but failed to win the required 50 percent plus one votes required to avoid the runoff.
In other races of local interest, Bryan Hughes had no trouble defeating David Simpson for the Texas Senate District 1 seat. Hughes collected 69.3 percent of the votes. The seat was vacated when incumbent Kevin Eltife chose not to seek another term. Mary Lou Bruner, who campaigned heavily in the county for the State Board of Education District 9, lost to Kevin Ellis 59.2 to 40.8 percent. The race for the Texas Railroad Commission will come down to Democrat Grady Yarbrough and Republican Wayne Christian in November.
Yarbrough defeated Cody Garrett 53.9 to 46.1 percent. Christian gets the GOP nod with a win over Gary Gates.
