TC annexation fails, LK-CISD bond denied, and Atlanta goes wet

CASS COUNTY—Opponents of the Texarkana College annexation of Eastern Cass County won a resounding victory on Election Night, with voters rejecting the proposition by a 7,251 (or 78 percent) to 1,965 vote. This represented 99 percent of votes cast. The Cass County Clerk’s office had not tallied provisional ballots as of press time.

Texarkana College attempted to annex the boundaries of Atlanta, Queen City, Bloomburg, McLeod and Linden-Kildare School districts into their taxing district.

If the measure had passed, those living within the school districts would have been exempt from paying out-of-district fees.

However, over the last few months a group of voters who opposed raising property taxes became more vocal.

This anti-property tax increase sentiment also made its way into Linden.

KEEP CAMPAIGN SIGNS LEGAL, TxDOT URGES

State regulates placement of signs along highways

Political elections are usually accompanied by an increase in the number of campaign signs placed along roadways this time of year. State transportation officials want to make sure citizens and candidates are aware of the laws regulating their placement along state highways.

Under Texas law, it is a class C misdemeanor to place any sign on state highway right of way.  The penalty for violating this law is a fine of up to $500 per sign. It is legal to place a campaign signs on private property adjacent to state highways with landowners’ permission.

Restrictions require that signs be constructed of lightweight material and limited to 50 square feet in size.  Signs may be placed as early as 90 days prior to an election and must be removed within 10 days after an election.

City of Atlanta general election set for May 7

By Robin Aaron Hall

The City of Atlanta has set a general election for May 7.
On the ballot for the city is the Mayoral seat currently occupied by Keith Crow and the District 1 At Large Council chair currently filled by Councilman Chris Collins.
This election may be more expensive than usual due to the fact that the Cass County Clerk’s Office has said no to allowing the city to use their voting machines this go round, forcing the city to look to outside sources.
The added expense is expected to be about $15,000.
The reasoning behind the County Clerk’s refusal is that the city race may conflict with a potential runoff stemming from the Primary Election being held March 1.
