Oh, the stories he could tell. JD Souther, one of the preeminent songwriters of our time, is preparing for a four-night gig in the Lone Star State. It’s a mini-homecoming for the Texas native.
“My mother, Loty Finley, was from Amarillo,” Souther said during a telephone interview Wednesday. “She was a stenographer for the commanding officer where my dad was stationed at the end of World War II. He took her to his home in Detroit where JD was born. She hated it.” Besides a serious dislike of the city and cold weather, Loty missed her big, noisy, tightly-knit family.
