Cass County Obits May 24, 2017

Sandra Kay Lummus Duke, 63, of Bloomburg, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 21, 2017, after a valiant battle with breast cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God gave her tremendous strength and comfort.

She was born Oct. 1, 1953, to S. W. and Rosemary Lummus in Atlanta. A world traveler in her youth due to her father’s career, she often recounted the many adventures she had growing up with great passion. Bloomburg was always home, however, and she graduated from Bloomburg High School in 1972. She met Steve, her husband of more than 41 years, at the very first Cullen Baker Fair in Bloomburg.

She was blessed with a large and loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, Mamaw, sister and aunt. Her greatest calling in life was that of a mother and Mamaw. Her son, daughter and grandchildren were the light of her life. Her husband, Steve, stood by her side and was fiercely devoted to her care. A devoted prayer warrior, Sandra organized a nationwide day of prayer in 2015. One of her great joys in life was singing at church with her brother, sisters and niece.

She is preceded in death by her parents and great-niece Kelsi Blank.

She is survived by her husband, Steve; daughter, Lacie Schniederjan and husband Bleu; son, Steven Duke and wife Stephanie; six grandchildren, Carson Duke, Emerson Schniederjan, Caroline Duke, Ella Schniederjan, Colleen Duke and Cullen Duke; mother and father-in-law, Merle and Roy McAlexander; her siblings, Charlotte Allen, Gary Lummus, Sonya McCasland, Ronnie Lummus and Ricky Lummus and their families; and her siblings-in-law, Brenda Williams, Jackie Duke and Gary Duke and their families.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 22, at Hanner Funeral Service.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at First Baptist Church in Atlanta with Bro. Jeremiah Moss and Bro. Dale Perkins officiating. Interment will be in New Hope Cemetery in Bloomburg under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Texarkana (www.hospiceoftexarkana.org), whose dedicated service and ministry has been a tremendous blessing to Sandra and the family during the past several months.

William “Carrel” Porterfield, 75, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord Sunday, May 21, 2017, at his residence surrounded by family.

He was born June 9, 1941, in Douglassville. He was retired from Frito Lay and a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta. He enjoyed spending time mowing the yard, tractors and was a “picker” before picking was cool, but most of all he enjoyed helping others. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Stone; son, Mark Alan Porterfield; grandson, Tyler Dillon Porterfield; and his foster father, J. L. Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Porterfield of Atlanta; foster mother, Dorothy Smith of Atlanta; three sons, Ray Porterfield of Atlanta, Mitch Williams and wife Michelle of Richardson and Marty Williams and wife Shannon of Wiley; daughter, Melynn Williams of Fredericksburg; a brother, James Stone of Queen City; two sisters, Brenda Porter of San Antonio and Neda Stewart of Queen City; 11 grandchildren, Brian Porterfield of Conway, Ark., Caleb Porterfield of Atlanta, Aaron Porterfield of Saginaw, Melanie Porterfield of Atlanta, Corbin Williams of Wiley, Lucy Williams of Dallas, Greta Williams of Wiley, Will Porterfield of Atlanta, Ian Williams of Richardson, Marsella Williams of Richardson and Olivia Williams of Wiley; three great-grandchildren, Gavin Porterfield of Conway, Claire Porterfield of Saginaw and Zane Porterfield of Conway; and a number of other relatives.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Hanner Funeral Service.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at First Baptist Church in Atlanta with Bro. Wes Mills and Bro. James Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Laws Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service.
