Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs net huge wins over Lions

Both the Queen City boys and Queen City girls’ basketball teams picked up big wins last Friday night when they hosted New Boston.

Lady Bulldogs
Coming into the battle Queen City’s girls were 10-0 in district play, and New Boston had not lost a game since QC picked up a close win earlier in the first round of district play.
The game was tough throughout for both teams and after taking a, 15-12, lead after one quarter of play the Lady Bulldogs found themselves down, 29-26 at the break.
A 37-26 run in the second half sealed Queen City’s 12th consecutive win.
The Lady Bulldogs are only one win away from at least a share of the District 14-3A title.
Jessica Jones scored 22 points with eight rebounds, Tierra Johnson added 14 points with six boards, Emily Maxwell posted eight points with three rebounds, CeCe Walker recorded eight points with 14 boards, Jacie Lance had seven points with six rebounds and Madi Jones had four points with seven rebounds.
Queen City Head Coach Janice McMellon had this to say after the win.
“New Boston Coach Keri Waide has been a good friend for many years and she is one heck of a coach. She gets 100 percent out of her girls all of the time. We knew this going in and we also knew she would be making quick subs to wear us down,” McMellon said. “We don’t have depth on the bench, but the girls give all they have all of the time. I feel we were prepared as I had scouted games and viewed film with the girls.”
With the girls being tired and fighting sickness Coach McMellon knew it would be a battle.
“At 4:10 left, I called a time-out and told the girls ‘I know you are tired. I know you are, but I need a little over four minutes and you have to find it.’ There was no hesitation,” McMellon remarked. “Jessica Jones and Jacie Lance said, ‘we got this’ and everyone agreed. The look in those girls’ eyes told me they would not be defeated. That fire came from within and the girls left no doubt who wanted the District Championship the most.”
The Lady Bulldogs have reeled off 12 straight victories and hasn’t lost since a Dec. 6, loss to McLeod.
“After the Dec. 6 game, we, as a team, decided we would not lose another game. Practices have been long at times and hard always. We have battled colds, stomach bugs, and other aliments but have always stepped up and out performed our opponents,” McMellon stated. “This is the hardest working group of girls. They strive for excellence every day. They have come together to form a team and a family. The best memories for me come from morning breakfast, FCA meetings and game day meals after school. This is where the heart of the team is formed and grows.”
Coach McMellon is hoping for a packed gym on Senior Night which falls on Tuesday, Feb. 7, against DeKalb, and with the historic year and run these ladies are having she may just get her wish.

Bulldogs
The varsity boys lost a heartbreaker to Pewitt in the last game which gave them the urgency to beat the second place team in the district behind Daingerfield; a team QC has beat already.
The Bulldogs were tested from the get-go by the Lions but was only down, 28-27, at the break.

Junior High

The seventh grade competed in one of the most exciting games of the season. The whole game QC traded one point leads with the Lady Tigers and ended regulation play tied, 25-25.
Destinee Wells was able to get off a last second buzzer shot where she was fouled.
With no time left on the clock Wells made the first of her two free throws, making the score, 26-25, to end the game.
The leading scorers for the night were Nyla Harrison with 14 and Wells with 10 points.
