Political hopefuls tour Linden

LINDEN—The campaign trail for two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for their respective offices passed through Linden last week.
Lou Gigliotti, candidate for the 4th U.S. Congressional District was a guest of the Linden Lions Club Feb. 4.
State Senate District 1 Candidate Bryan Hughes, accompanied by representatives from CLEAT (Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas), stopped in Linden as part of a two-day, 11-day tour through the district.
A former math teacher and construction company Gigliotti is now in the auto business, building aftermarket high performance parts for Corvettes and other General Motor vehicles.
He is also a racer, having competed in the first NASCAR Truck series race
He is also a two-time Dallas Grand Prix Winner (1991 and 1993).
When asked how he could continue to race at his age, Gigliotti joked “I can do anything sitting down.”
Gigliotti, who is making his fourth run for Congress, said that he is running against incumbent John Ratcliffe because he believes the congressman no longer represents the people.
“This is a county of we the people, not we the lawyers,” he said.
He added that he was tired of politicians breaking their promises.
During his stop in Linden Charley Wilkison, executive director of CLEAT, presented Hughes with the organization’s Visionary Leadership Award for his legislative support of law enforcement.
During the last session, Hughes was a key supporter of HB 1278, which doubled death benefits for the families of law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty.
“We need to send someone back to Austin who belives in law enforcement,” Wilkison said.
Wilkison said that Hughes is the first state representative to receive CLEAT’s Visionary Leadership Award.
He is also an opponent of legalizing marijuana and supports allowing seized drugs funds to go into law enforcement.
