In an effort to up local donations to the American Cancer Society this year, Cass County’s Relay For Life board decided to see through a new fundraising event for 2015. The first of its kind Dash for Life Barrel Race was born to benefit American Cancer Society.
The event took place July 18 at Cass County Championship Rodeo Arena.
Organizer Becky Garrett hopes to see the event take on a life of its own in the years to come.
Participants from all over the region took part in the barrel race and helped raise another $3,200 toward research, treatment and finding a cure for cancer.
Deemed “rodeo action for a good cause” drew nearly 100 entrants in its first year.
Five custom-designed Tres Rios buckles will were awarded to the winners. These prizes were made possible thanks to several local sponsors. These included the Linden Economic Development Corporation, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Cass County Bank and Texas National Bank of Marshall.
Many other local sponsors took part in the event as well.
“We had 96 participants,” Garrett said. “Between silent auction, sponsors, and office fees we were able to donate $3,200 to the American Cancer Society.” Jami Whatley helped plan and put on the event...We were happy to do it. I was glad to see this event draw a whole different crowd than the relay. There were many young people involved. It was a whole different group.”
“We appreciate all the community support we had for the event. Even though it’s not as traditional as the Relay for Life, the barrel race was a great fundraiser and gave us a chance to involve more individuals from around the area. We hope to make the Dash for Life an annual event that will continue to grow.”
