Suspect caught after high speed pursuit
A suspect has been apprehended after what started off as a routine traffic stop on U.S. 59, quickly turned into a high-speed chase through the streets of Atlanta. A two-hour manhunt in the woods east of the city followed after the suspect wrecked a vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 16, Texas Highway Trooper Carlos Wilson pulled over a silver Lexus L6450 with Illinois license plates on U.S. 59 near the Cass County line at mile marker #260.
Wilson said that he backed away from the car not, expecting the driver to either get out of the car or open the trunk remotely.
Instead, the drive slammed on the gas and took off toward Atlanta. Wilson gave pursuit, joined by fellow state troopers and law enforcement from Cass County and Atlanta P.D.
At the Highway 77 intersection, the Lexus turned in toward town.
Wilson said the driver reached speeds up to 130 miles per hours as he raced along West Main Street, twice running through red lights. One driver, who was on the street near downtown, told the Journal that the Lexus missed sideswiping his truck by a couple of feet. The Lexus also barely missed a head-on collision at the intersection of Main and William Street.
