City, school board filing period closing soon

The filing period for city and school board seats to be decided during the May 11 election opened January 30.

The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is 5 p.m., Friday, March 1. The deadline to file as a write-in candidate is the same.

Three seats are up for grabs on the Atlanta City Council.

Challengers may file to contest for the District 2 chair held by Arlie Kyzer, the District 3 chair held by James O’Kelley and the District 4 chair held by Dean McDuff.

Filing packets are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Atlanta City Hall, 315 N. Buckner St.

Four at-large slots are open on the Atlanta Independent School District board.

Places held by John Newkirk, Mark Rinehart, Joel Steger and Joe Wall will be decided.

Filing packets are available at Atlanta City Hall.

Three at-large seats may be contested on the Bloomburg City Council.

The terms of Janice Hooker, Delores Simmons and Connie Thomason have concluded.

Filing packets are available from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, at Bloomburg City Hall, 121 E. Main.

Two at-large positions are open on the Bloomburg Independent School District board.

The two-year terms of Jake Hooker and Timmy Stanley are up.

Filing packets are available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the BISD administration building, 211 Cypress St.

Three positions are up for grabs on the Linden City Council.

They are for mayor, presently held by Clarence Burns, and two aldermen places, held by

 

Pat Roberson and Richard Hutsell.

Filing packets are available from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Linden City Hall, 104 S. Main St.

McLeod Independent School District will participate in the November elections.

Four positions are open on the Queen City City Council.

Challengers may apply to run for the office of mayor, held by Harold Martin.

Also open are three council seats: Place 3, held by Charles Mathus; Place 4, held by Becky Walker; and Place 5, held by Jack Gilliam.

Gilliam is filling the unexpired term of A.R. "Buddy" Sirmans, who died in 2012.

Filing packets are available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Queen City City Hall, 601 Loop 236.

Three at-large openings will be decided on the Queen City Independent School District board.

The terms of Craig Beckham, Jim Davenport and Steve Tong are up.

All city council and school board terms are two years.

The last day to register to vote in the May 11 election is Thursday, April 11.

Early voting begins Monday, April 29. The final day to vote early is Tuesday, May 7.

Election Day is Saturday, May 11.
