JACKIE SMITH
Dec. 12, 1958 – April 25, 2017
Jackie Smith, 58, of Bloomburg, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, April 25, 2017, after a courageous 14-year battle with cancer.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1958, in Atlanta. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she enjoyed working with the children’s ministry. She loved her church family and her Monday Night Ladies Bible Study group. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and cruising the Caribbean. Above all, she loved the Lord and was an inspiration to many. She began her career as a legal assistant in the early 80s and worked for numerous attorneys in Atlanta and Texarkana. After passing a rigorous exam, she became a Certified Legal Assistant on Feb. 1, 1996. She finally found her “home” when she joined the Linden firm of Lovelace and Dowd on April 16, 1998. When her boss Donald Dowd was elected as the Cass County Court at Law, he asked her to join him as his Court Reporter. This was new territory for her, but tenacious as ever, she worked hard and earned her certification in May 2005. She served as the official court reporter of the Cass County Court at Law from August 1, 2005 until her death. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, John M. “Mike” Smith of Bloomburg; very special cousins Kathy Roberts and husband David of Queen City, Tara Evans and husband Chris of Texarkana and Gregory Roberts of Panama City, Fla.; a sister of the heart, Yolanda Hawkins and husband Greg of Queen City; and two “adopted” sons, Micah Hawkins and wife Heather of Houston and Caleb Hawkins of Corpus Christi; and a host of friends and other relatives.
