Annual ‘E-Waste Recycle’ program coming April 22

From staff reports

The Amity Study Club’s 12th Annual E-Waste Recycle Event will take place Saturday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the old Atlanta Fire Station at 313 E. Hiram Street.
The longstanding annual event gives people a chance to dispose of old electronic devices in a way that keeps them from being dumped in a landfill.
Not coincidentally, April 22 is Earth Day.
Local Boy Scout Troop 47 helps the club gather recyclable electronic devices, and UNICOR provides a semi-truck trailer for collecting and transporting them.
In years past, literally tons of waste, which otherwise might have found its way into a landfill, has been gathered and taken to Texarkana’s Federal Corrections Institute, where the parts to be recycled are separated by inmates for UNICOR’s recycling effort.
This has the additional benefit of helping inmates gain skills that can help them upon release.
Another far-reaching benefit of the program: Cell phones collected are donated to the local Domestic Violence Prevention Center where, after being refurbished, they are provided to victims of domestic violence.
Among the items that can be accepted are answering machines, audio/visual equipment, cameras, calculators, desk top computers and laptops, MP3 players, game consoles, televisions and VCRs.
The comprehensive list is too long to include here, but those with questions can call 903-796-2274.
Some items that can’t be accepted are furniture and file cabinets, acids, film, paint/liquids of any kind and refrigerants.
