The Linden-Kildare Student Council recently presented Brock Troxell and his parents, Wes and Haley, with a check for $10,304.95 following a benefit fundraiser.
Each year the student council organizes a community service project. This year’s event, named the “Benefit for Brock Barrel Race and Silent Auction”, was the largest such event to date. Lindis Boles, student council sponsor, thanked everyone who helped with the benefit.
“You don’t pull something like this off without lots and lots of help,” said Boles.
“There were so many people who came out that day, we had sponsors from all over the community that donated money and silent auction items. It was amazing.”
Boles called out student council members by name who gave their Saturday to help with the event.
Brock Troxell was diagnosed with Spinal Muscle Atrophy Type 2 in February 2016.
The council chose to have a benefit for Brock because his grandmother Debbie Hamilton is secretary at Linden-Kildare High School.
“It’s unbelievable -- we can’t say thank you enough,” said Wes Troxell. “If you guys don’t know about SMA, basically it’s a motor neuron disease where your motor neurons die off slowly over time and different kids are affected differently -- he had Type 2, which is a little stronger.
“Sometimes in life things happen and you know quite frankly, there’s no answer -- and the day that it happened I don’t think that I have ever questioned God like that, but he always got a plan and this is just the latest example of that.”
Brock’s insurance recently approved medication and he will begin treatment on March 29.
“When he was diagnosed, there was no treatment for SMA,” Wes Troxell said. “It was just, ‘this is what is coming down the road and there is nothing you can do about it’ -- but now there is a treatment, the first ever approved by the FDA.”
Brock will have to go to Fort Worth every two weeks for the first three injections.
Brock’s grandparents and great-grandparents were in attendance at the ceremony when the check was presented.
Haley and Wes Troxell both thanked the community and the student council.
“We just want to say thank you to Mrs. Boles and L-K high school and the town of Linden and the student council for all of your hard work -- it means so much to our family,” said Haley Troxell.
